    Fabricated and not convincing!!!

Michael Winterbottom has already proved that he is not interested inbeing an auteur at all. In the career of prolific cineaste, you can'tmark a trio of films which can reflect the same narratives, visuals, styles and concepts of cinema. After winning two bears at Berlinalewith two docu-dramas, NOT OF THIS WORLD and ROAD TO GUANTANAMO, inprevious editions, he's back with an experience in neo-noir, THE KILLERINSIDE ME, which is not convincing in different aspects. Adapting JimThompson's story, Winterbottom faces too many problems: first of all,he does not feel at home in Americas and sticks to a fabricatedpictorial of the cinematic land, almost a collage of clich?d pics - farfrom inventivity and originality evident in John Dahl's ventures in thegenre or U TURN; secondly and perhaps the most important one, castingof Casey Affleck as the main character is not convincing, since he doesnot reflect any complication, does not fit in a role with two women inlove (played by Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson), does not affect theaudience with his anger and does not afflict anyone with his weak voicealso used as a Chandeleresque narrator; and at last, but not the leastwhole production seems to be pointless – both in content and form.

Regrettable attempt at sexed-up, R-rated film noir...

The Killer of Inside Me is the one of the best work of Hollywood moviemakers. Michael Winterbottom has done a great job once again. He makesa film with his own style. I like to watch his every movie. He is oneof my favourite director from Bollywood. The Killer of Inside Me is nota newly created story, we have seen many films on that type of story, but the main reason of success of this movie is the art of directionand the actors casted in this movie are experienced except Jess Alba.Casey Afflect has no experience how to act, and he has given role onhis acting skills. The focused characters were Bill Pullman (Billy BoyWalker), Blake Brigham (Young Lou Ford) and Shekhar (Max's DinerWaitress). The man in totally form Mr. Ned Beatty is done a brilliantjob, his experience in acting talks. This movie would be incompletewithout him. Sheriff Bob Maples is not taking any chances to give badperformance. He was the second third reason of the success of themovie. And Brent Briscoe is the package of Comedy and Emotion. LiamAiken is pretty good. And the other cast were perfect in their roles. On the whole, this movie is good package of entertainment with lovelymelodies by RAM SAMPAT. Don't forget to watch this movie at least 1time.

the true meaning of subversive cinema?

This is possibly the best film Michael Winterbottom ever made; and oneof the more accessible.
For me, this film is about the search for American pride after 9/11;and the absurd importance placed upon it above all others things.Michael Winterbottom critiques each different group's reaction - thestudents, the police and army, the elderly, the war criminals, thebusinessmen.
Winterbottom fills his film with a group of completely differingmysterious characters, forces them in close proximity to each other andobserves them interacting often with explosive results. None reallyhave importance over the other, and all are flawed.
I read on IMDb that Casey Affleck is ashamed of two of his films. Nowhe has a third one to add to the list. This film was horrible anddisgusting. The final scenes had a song playing with the lyrics "shame"playing over and over. This could be the theme for the whole cast andcrew and especially the director.

Winterbottom more of a hype creator than a director

After reading tons of reviews on "The Killer Inside Me" I've decided tomake a couple of comments. To begin with I want to ask the director toplease try hard to make a film next time that does not require themassive hype of contrived controversy to get a distribution deal. Let'ssee...his last film "9 Songs" was basically a porno film with a budget(full of close up unsimulated sex scenes) and this most recent film isbasically a violence porn film full of close up scenes of JessicaAlba's face being smashed in. Sure, he'll say he was being faithful tothe book, but who cares. That's like writing a script where all thewomen are strippers so having lots of strippers in the film isjustified. The second thing I want to comment on/ask is for otherreviewers to please stop being morons. You know, the ones who write:"The Killer Inside Me" is a moral film because it shows how badviolence is? What an intelligent argument. How stupid are we that weneed to be shown how bad violence is? This is a cop-out made by idiotslikely being paid by Winterbottom who realizes he stepped over the lineand is being seen as the 1-trick pony he really is. Golly, maybe weshould show it in grade schools to detract would be bullies from beingviolent? If that works maybe we should make a graphic movie about thehorrors of mosquito bites and show it to mosquitos so they will stopbiting us. Winterbottom has little real talent. This is why all of hisfilms must rely on being as controversial as possible--it's the onlyway he can hope to get the investors money back. My guess is that hehad a wealthy mommy and daddy and they bought his way into the filmindustry.
Just what the world needs...another no-talent, rich kid filmmaker.

    Boring and poorly develop

Either from a fan's point of view and from a non-fan-based point ofview, either way, it is highly suggested NOT to watch this film.Whether it's acting, editing, writing, plotting, effects, sound, orcalligraphy, it's all relatively poor. The cameras are generally shottoo close to the actor's face during dialog and the acting in term ofexpression are usually over-acted or lack; with a hint ofcheerlessness.
The acting was really poor and unconvincing from the relatively youngmain characters and to some of the more mature professional actors.
This is a poorly develop film with no sense in wowing or keep withsuspense to its audience. It lack in guidelines and transition forcaptivating its viewers.
So to anyone out there that are planning to watch this film, don't! Itis a drunken mistake await for regrets. This film is as bad as itsounds. Don't waste your time and money watching this.

    a slow burner

OK first off i will say that i went to see this film with my girlfriendboth of us had high expectations and she was a little worried over theexpected violence that caused people to walk out during its firstscreening.I will admit that i am not squeamish and after what i hadheard and read thought that i would be seeing some strong attacks andbdsm against women,i have to say that the violence was not extreme inany way (especially if you compare it to the likes of irreversible)yeshe was hitting women and that is wrong but both attacks last less than5 min in total there was hardly any blood considering his first attackwas just him punching her in the face i would expect a lot of blood thebruises and swelling looked fake after he had finished ,the secondattack he kills her with 2 punches to the stomach and 2 kicks to theribs she doesn't even look like she has been hit really as she liesthere even my girlfriend said it was soft and unrealisticafterwards.also the so called bdsm is non existent he has sex with albawith a belt around her neck and slaps both of them on the bum thats iti hardly call that bdsm.as for the film it was OK (i gave it a6)affleck was average didn't see any of this slow burning of akiller/psycho till right before the end when he was talking to himselfin the mirror about wearing a tie(hardly the best way to show you havesnapped).i have to say the ending was obvious too after telling himalba died she turns up in his petrol soaked house with the police toarrest him which goes wrong as affleck stabs her and the police shootthem setting the petrol alight(god knows how he lit his cigar justbefore that without blowing the house up)and killing them all.overallan indifferent film that could have been much better.i will say thatI've not read the book but I'm going to buy it and then compare it buti imagine that the book will be a lot better.

A Strong Performance, but a Flawed Narrative

I was personally highly disappointed with the narrative. The screenplayseemed to betray the strong of of Affleck, forgetting to let thecharacter in Ford's head. Ford is psychotic, and therefore a unreliablenarrator. It isn't until the final scene that this is even remotelyshown. As it is the script only comes off as shallow.
Still Affleck gives a fine performance, and we probably have Hudson'sbest work in almost a decade, or at least since The Skeleton Key. Albabrings very little to the role, but her performance isn't necessarilybad either. It just is.
The Killer Inside Me isn't necessarily a terrible film, and it not afilm to avoid by means, but it certainly isn't anything to rush out tosee. Part's of it are certainly worth while, most notably the scenestowards the middle of the film.

    Shocking!

I just watched this movie. I don't think it was that bad compared tosome I have seen this year. I particularly liked Casey Afleck'sperformance, he looked like he was mumbling too much in the beginning, but then I think he achieved really amazing scenes. What I didn't likeabout the movie was that I could not understand very well some of thedialogue and missed some of the plot. The killing scenes of the womenwere really shocking. I had to turn my face away. I thought they weregoing to show the boy dying, but they didn't (not sure why). I give it5 out of 10 because at least is not like some crap that has beenaround. It grabbed my attention from beginning to end.

Casey Affleck himself is facing some sexual harassment charges against women in real life that makes his performance strangely disturbing and believable (Winks)

THE KILLER INSIDE ME – CATCH IT ( B- ) The Killer inside Me is one ofthe most brutal, gritty and disturbing movies I've seen recently. Thereis some heavily used violence against women and watching beautifulwomen like Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson tortured to death like that wasquite disturbing. Casey Affleck leaves a strong impact as a neurotic, vicious women sexual abuser & Killer. Casey Affleck himself is facingsome sexual harassment charges against women in real life that makeshis performance strangely disturbing and believable (Winks). JessicaAlba not only shed her clothes in the movie but her good girl image aswell. It's good to see her finally doing something mature. For me KateHudson never looked the part but nonetheless she manages to leave someimpact may be tortured death sequence was extremely strong. Simon Bakeris alright. All the other actors did a fine job. A good attempt by thedirector though I would have love to see some more characterizationabout Casey's childhood. The movie becomes unbearable at times becauseof the lead character's cruelness and not having any remorse overkilling so many innocent people. Watch it on your own risk as theviolent sequences are way too antagonistic to forget!

    I smell somethings Artsy

Well Well Well, Gollywood has done it again produced another ArtsySfartsy piece of garbage for the lazy, unhappy dark prurient meanspirited low laying minds who posture and suppose intellectual andartistic authority and relevance by beating a couple helpless women todeath on screen in graphic detail,, To Kate Hudson and Jessica Alba, thank you for allowing yourself to be portrayed so cheaply that way, Iam sure this will do wonders for the N.O.W. , Nah, I don't think theywill have even notice nor care, How sad. I can hardly wait for whatmight be next from writers John Curran and Jim Thompson, perhaps theycan portray pedophilia up close and personal in some disgustingun-artful way as well? Or what about smashing the brains out of somehelpless child on screen, perhaps Michael Winterbottom could call inCormac McCarthy to write a few good scenes of dead babies hanging intrees or laying about dead and rotting. God I smell an Academy Award,or at least I smell something, I think it is a rotting jaded heartsthat I smell. Not sure. I am helpless here to change a thing about youor you're "Art," nor amazingly, would I even If I could. You see Ibelieve in freedom of speech, no matter how abhorrent to me some of itmight be. But I can vote with my little review here and I can vote withmy feet by taking them and my $9.50 to a box office that does notinclude any of the future works of Casey Afleck, Kate Hudson, JessicaAlba, Michael Winterbottom John Curran or Jim Thompson and I promiseyou that I will do that without question. One final word to Ned Beaty,Here my song when I say to you , that I have always loved your work, atleast when you were raped and sodomized in Deliverance, someone killedthe bastards that did it and you did not run to the arms of yourattacker begging him to love you until he stabbed you to death, - youmust have needed a paycheck on this one but for the rest of you likeyour movie theme says "SHAME SHAME ON YOU,…SHAME SHAME ON YOU, forlending your talents and energy and heart to such rubbish.

An Early Look at an Impressive new Film

THE KILLER INSIDE ME is currently found in the on demand portions offilms currently in theaters, and despite the fact that this film willnot be released until this Friday, it is so well made and headed foracclaim that encouraging the public to view this film is an obligationfor those who have seen it early. The story is difficult for manyreasons: the story if terrifyingly real in the manner in which it isrelated in the first person, and the grisly violence alone will makemany a viewer cast down their eyes. Based on the novel by Jim Thompson, the screenplay is one of those singularly superb pieces of writing (byJohn Curran and director Michael Winterbottom) that adapts not only thenovel's impact but also employs the lyrics of country western music andthe slangy conversation of West Texas in a manner that completelyrecreates an atmosphere that makes the story even more compelling.
Lou Ford (Casey Affleck, in a performance that shouts Oscar) is thetown sheriff assisting the alcoholic and aging Sheriff Bob Maples (TomBower). Lou is a typically polite, courteous, gentlemanly'good-ol'-boy', respected and admired by everyone in his Podunk town. But there is something strange about Lou, something quietly dark thatonly is seen in his relationships with his girlfriend Amy (KateHudson): sadism is part of their physical moments. Lou is asked to runa prostitute out of town, a young girl Joyce (Jessica Alba) who livesin a small house on the outskirts of town where she quietly servicesthe 'reputable men' - one of whom is Elmer Conway (Jay R Ferguson), anold schoolmate of Lou's who is inheriting his wealthy father ChesterConway's (Ned Beatty) mammoth construction business. Lou visits Joyceand despite some turns of sadistic behavior bonds with her and beginsto see her on a regular basis. When the elder Conway wants Lou to helprid the town (and his son's reputation) of Joyce, a blackmail schemeensues that leads to dire circumstances. Lou's 'killer inside' comesout and he calmly murders both Joyce and Elmer and then finds ways tocover the incident. He makes some errors in judgment that involve anold friend Johnnie Pappas (Liam Aiken) and a bum on the street (BrentBriscoe) and talks too much with labor union leader Joe Rothman (EliasKoteas) until his involvement is questioned by an investigator (SimonBaker). His home life with Amy is strained and Amy's presence begins toget in the way of Lou's sadistic behavior breaks until the entiresituation becomes a crisis that ends in a bizarre manner.
Casey Affleck embodies the dark aspects of Lou with a completelyrealized portrayal: despite his crimes we stay with him, much the waythe townsfolk do. His is one of those performances that stays with theviewer long after the film is over. The exceptional cast is excellentdown to the smallest role. Director Winterbottom gives us a West Texasatmosphere that is pure dust and heat and Midwestern politeness andritual. He adds some elements to the story that make the character ofLou even more unreal: often in Lou's moments alone in his house thebackground music is classical music - Mahler's Symphony No. 2(Resurrection) and Strauss's haunting 'Four Last Songs' (as sung byElizabeth Schwarzkopf I believe). It is a magical touch with anotherworld outside the confines of the story.
Though many viewers may find the degree of physical violence severelydisturbing, the manner in which it happens makes Lou's dark side morecredible and allows us to believe the ending. It is a difficult film, but it is one of the finer films of the year.

    Thought provoking

This film provokes a wide range of emotions in viewers as well aspromoting debate. I personally dislike violence directed towards women, however in this case it assisted in displaying the disturbed mentalstate of the main character. Yes the film was misogynistic but you haveto bear in mind the time period it was set in, women were treatedunfairly by the males on a daily basis due to this attitude beinginstilled in males from childhood.
The lack of excessive special effects drew my attention to the story, avast amount of films nowadays are heavily laden with special effectswhich seem to be used to hide the fact that a film has very littlesubstance to it's storyline. This film has substance to support itself, you'll either like it or not but it will no doubt provide somediscussion

I wish John Dahl had directed this film.

A director can make or break a film, we all know that, but I wouldargue that film noir is the one genre where the director is most vitalto the success of the film. I say that because it is most often a filmthat can work as style over substance and when it works that style isbrilliant. For me John Dahl and the Coen Brothers are the best livingnoir directors. Blood Simple, Kill Me Again, Red Rock West, are allmodern noir works of genius. This film not so much. The sound editorshould never work in film again. Mumbled lines were often made harderto hear by overly loud country western swing background music. Thesound was a true mess. As far as the acting, it was uniformly strong.Casey Affleck and Elias Koteas shine above a still very solid andtalented cast, but I just didn't believe any of what transpired. Ithink a more competent director would have overcome that problem. Iknow that Winterbottom was trying to juxtapose the clean cut innocentexterior of the Affleck character with the sociopathic interior, but heoverdoes it. It is not an easy film to watch, and if you don't cringeat some of the goings on, I hope we never cross paths in a dark alley.
Better than "Brick" but worse than any other film noir that I canremember having seen and I have seen a lot of them. Probably myfavorite genre.

    truly one border

"The Killer Inside Me" is based on a Jim Thompson novel about a deputysheriff in a small town in 1950s Texas who has a murderous streak. Itpreviously got filmed in 1976 with Stacy Keach and Susan Tyrell. Havingnever read the book or seen the previous movie version, I can onlycomment on this current version.
A lot of controversy has been swirling about the movie's scenes ofgraphic violence, and in particular how it gets inflicted on women. Idon't know exactly what director Michael Winterbottom's aim was - letalone what Jim Thompson's original intent was in the novel - but theviolence does seem a little over the top, although they may have beendoing everything possible to stress the character's sociopath side. ButI wouldn't say that this was any sort of bad movie, just a little tooextreme in some parts. Probably worth seeing once.
Starring Casey Affleck, Jessica Alba, Kate Hudson, Ned Beatty, EliasKoteas and Bill Pullman.

Watchable, but not shocking or plausible

    This review will contain spoilers.
So I rented this film On Demand expecting a harrowing but realisticlook at BDSM gone awry. What I got was a fitfully engaging film noirwith some serious plot holes and a few scenes of sex and violence thatweren't even remotely as graphic as promised. On Demand actually hasTWO separate warnings (one in the description and one when you buy thefilm) about strong, graphic violence and sex. Having seen Irreversible,Martyrs, Antichrist, and a number of other legitimately rough indiefilms, I didn't see anything in The Killer Inside Me that warranted anycaution.
The BDSM element is hardly there. Casey Affleck spanks Jessica Alba'sbare rear and later chokes her with his belt while they're having sex.I'm not disappointed in the lack of titillation, but this film barelytouches on the intersection between sex and violence and doesn't haveanything intelligent to say on the subject. The movie actually impliesthat Casey Affleck is a remorseless killer in part because his motherwas a sexual masochist ... huh? Affleck gives a creepy, understatedperformance but I found his character to be fairly shallow. So far asthe violence, there is a beating that might be hard to take for timidaudiences, but I don't expect many viewers are going to have troublewatching the film.
The movie looks terrific and it's extremely well-acted, particularlyAffleck in the lead role. The supporting actors (Ned Beatty and BillPullman in particular) are also excellent. Alba and Kate Hudson arehere mainly for window-dressing; their parts were pretty shallow. Somepeople have complained about the inappropriate rockability music duringdark moments in the film but it worked for me.
The big issue is the lack of psychological depth and some serious plotholes. The ending in particular - when a character who "died" early onis suddenly revived for no reason whatsoever - was pretty laughable. Inever got the sort of sordid, noir feeling out of this film that thedirector was clearly shooting for. Overall it was an entertainingenough diversion and certainly watchable, but not even remotely upthere with modern noirs like Blood Simple, The Last Seduction, BlueVelvet, etc.

    Save that for the birds.

Casey Affleck as Deputy Sheriff Lou Ford had some old business to takecare of. An encounter with a prostitute (Jessica Alba) gave him achance to use her for a few months before he used her to get back atthe Conways, using son Elmer (Jay R. Ferguson) to get to dad Chester(Ned Beatty).
Trouble is, he finds he likes what he did to those two.
However, he wasn't as smart as he thought he was. The Sheriff (TomBower) knew, the DA (Simon Baker) knew, the union boss (Elias Koteas)knew, and another deputy (Matthew Maher) knew. Even his girlfriend(Kate Hudson) knew. How was he going to get out of this? If ChesterConway knew, he wasn't.
What an ending! Casey Affleck was great.

Mildly Effective But It's Just Missing Too Much

    Killer Inside Me, The (2010)
    ** (out of 4)
This film noir is an adaptation of the 1952 cult novel from JimThompson, the same man who wrote the screenplay for PATHS OF GLORY aswell as had other novels turned into films including THE GETAWAY andTHE GRIFTERS. This film takes place in a small Texas town where DeputyLou Ford (Casey Affleck) holds some dark secrets, which turn evendarker once he meets a prostitute (Jessica Alba) and the two getinvolved in a blackmail scheme, which goes wrong from the start. SoonFord must start killing one after another to try and keep his secretaway from his fianc? (Kate Hudson) and the others who begin to feelhe's hiding something. Those who have seen THE GETAWAY will remember acertain sadistic scene in that film but you haven't seen anything yetas THE KILLER INSIDE ME makes that film and scene look like somethingfrom a Walt Disney cartoon. There's a scene where Affleck pretty muchbeats someones head to where he smashes like a tomato would and thisscene is without question shocking and downright grisly to watch. Intoday's day and age where everything can be seen it's hard to believethat we could see something as shocking as we get here but the impactof this scene will certainly leave a mark on the viewer. The brutalityof the scene is right in your face and you can tell a lot of time andeffort went into it but it appears this sequence was just about theonly thing that the director and screenwriter were clear on. The restof the film comes as a bitter disappointment because outside of acouple good performances the rest of the film is flat. I put most ofthe blame on the screenplay as it never really seems clear on what itwants to do. At times it seems that they want us to enjoy the darknessof the material and like the Affleck character but then it keepsthrowing in one subplot after another and none of it ever makes toomuch sense. The original twist that goes wrong is something I neverbelieved and not for a second did I believe Affleck could get away witheverything that he did. There are countless noir titles that make yoususpense some common sense but this film asks a little too much.Another problem is that we get a few flashbacks to Affleck's youthwhere we see some of the reasons for him being so screwed up yet thefilm never really shows how dark and creepy the stuff was. The film ispretty much flat without too much energy and I'm going to guess thatthe laid back approach was what they were going for but it's simply toobland and boring to be interesting. Affleck is good in his role but Ithink the screenplay really lets the character down. Hudson doesn't gettoo much to do but Alba impresses with her role and she makes it quiteflashy and sexy. Ned Beatty has a brief part and does well with it asdoes Bill Pullman who shows up quickly. The film made a splash atseveral festivals but I think most of the hype goes to the one sadisticscene and the rest is pretty much forgettable.

    Empty Film

A film with little depth or emotion, it seemed like I was watchingsomething that never really got off the ground. And with so muchpotential with a title like this, and in an era like that, I was leftthoroughly disappointed and wishing I /had/ fallen asleep in thecinema.
Lou, our psychotic killer, was barely psychotic, just entirelydetached. His claims of love going unbelieved when he beats in thefaces of those he claims such hold over. And though I understood hisreasoning where others didn't, and connected the dots in his insaneplots, I still didn't /get/ it. It just seemed pointless and unneeded.Revenge upon one became the murder of several.
You also fail entirely to grow to like or care about any of thesecharacters, nor do you ever understand any of their motivations.
At the end I am only left wondering WHY? Why, why, why, why, why? Andnot even about Lou and what he does, but about what the people aroundhim did.
From start to end I found events happening too quickly or too slowly,or without relevance or need, or even out of pure stupidity.
    A very poor movie.

    Inexcusable violence

Aside from director, who is promising, the acting which was prettygood, the pointlessness of Jessica Alba being in this role, the storywhich was good, I have this film a 3. The viscous violence againstwomen and the other victims is just a disgrace. When we reward filmswith such graphic violence, what does it say about us? I am a tough oldguy, a vet, but i don't want to see this kind of violence against womenacted out. Why? I am not squeamish at all. It is a question of what isright. I live in Italy now. I notice that only in America do you see,on a regular basis, stories of people making multiple murders likethis, in real life. It is a strange equation that has done well forHollywood. While this film poses as film noir, in film noir there is NOREASON to ever explicitly define the violence, part of the reason, inmy view, that it is film noir. Why Jessica Alba would allow herself tobe seen in this role is a big question. Does she agree with this kindof violence against women? She has choices and artistic authority inher films these days. So, it is a well done slasher film without theslasher, and trying to disguise itself as something else by adding thatTexas element. Also, you never see Texas clothes on these people. thewardrobe crew was lost. Interesting but tragically staged film in myview.
