Stoner skits galore in this live performance reteaming of the legendarycomic team of Cheech and Chong(as well as Tommy's babe wife), reformedafter 25 years. A Lewd and profane series of vignettes, unleashing avariety of bizarre characters based on an array of stereotypes aped tothe delight of a San Antonio audience who greets them with constantadulation and hero worship. I think I enjoyed Tommy Chong's stand-uproutines(especially the comedy regarding his cat)better than the skitsput together with sequences featuring characters who are supposedlymembers of the audience(Chong dressed in S & M leather opposite Cheechin drag with a fake poodle; Chong as a stoner opposite Cheech as awasted drug dealer)critiquing the show and performers. Skits includeCheech and Chong as mutts(!), "Let's Make a Deal"(this time the showhas a contestant playing for chance to score weed!), two druggiesparked in a car, musical interludes featuring a blind Mississippi bluesman(played by Chong) and a Texas redneck(played by Cheech), among otherwild concoctions. My favorite skit is without a doubt the old couple ina theater watching a porno(Chong as an old coot describing in distinctdetail what is on screen while a mostly mute Cheech in old hag dragresponds in kind; it's priceless!). Lots of raunch, so if you areeasily offended at potty humor and sex and drug related material, bestto stay as far away as possible. As expected, some of the humor isaimed at past president George Bush for the times where Chong was putin jail for his marijuana legal troubles. Lots of Mexican gags/jokesfeatured throughout in C & C's program.
User: fgwri (fgwri@hotmail.com)Although I love some of their movies, I've always felt like Cheech &Chong's stand up routines are lewd, tasteless and don't compare toother comedians of their era. Their "stoners on a journey" schtick hasmade for some hilarious comedies, but in my opinion does not translatewell to the stage.Richard Pryor, for example, was as vulgar as theycome, but he was able to add substance and some biting socialcommentary to his act. C&C, on the other hand, just do vulgarity forvulgarity's sake. This movie was more or less a bad remake of ahorrible concert movie, 1983's "Still Smokin". Unless you're a huge C&Cfan, steer clear of this one. If you are a C&C newbie, I wouldrecommend watching "Up in Smoke" instead.
User: adrianeverett74Through the 1970's on into the early 1980's Cheech and Chong kept TheWorld stoned with their brand of comedy. Millions of records were sold, several movies were made between Paramount Pictures and UniversalStudios. The party seemed to never end but all that came to ascreeching halt and Cheech and Chong went their separate ways. Cheechsobered up and became a big star while Chong just stayed Chong andsmoked his way through the 1990's and into the millennium.
This Live Concert taken from the Light Up America and Canada Tour getsCheech and Chong back together again, They are older, fatter, wrinklier, grayer, yet still they are Cheech and Chong. This show wasactually what they performed back in their club days in Canada beforethey came down to the U.S.A. and smoked everyone up.
This DVD was released the same day as it was broadcast at movietheaters across the U.S. on 4/20.
I only give it five stars because this was made specifically for thedie hard fans. Oddly the "synopsis" on the page here says "documentary"but it's just concert footage of their tour (in San Antonio).
I was a fan of Cheech and Chong when I was a kid because they weregoofy and had lots of quotable lines (you'd recite at school with yourfriends). But not being a pot smoker and an adult now, it's not my cupof tea. It appears this was essentially just mostly old bits from theiroriginal act and movies with a few new bits that weren't really funny(and include some old stock jokes, like "spell your name backward" towhich he turns around and spells his name - a joke we did in elementaryschool). I couldn't watch the whole thing - it was literallyunwatchable - that is unless you're really into pot and dick jokes.
The worst part of all wasn't even Cheech and Chong, but Chong's wife -who opens the show with some "stand up" and I use that phrase lightly. Some of her "jokes" were "do you like pot?" "Isn't pot great?" "Pot'sgreat, isn't it?" "Doesn't pot make everything better? Like sex?" "Canyou believe they arrested Tommy for selling bongs?" Nary a punchline oreven set up for that matter. Just a bunch of statements about pot. Andin one set up scene, Cheech and Chong comment on how "she's killing."She wasn't killing. She was just getting cheers for saying pot in everysentence. There was no actual talent involved in what she was doing.
I couldn't watch the whole thing. Again, this wasn't geared for folkslike me and I know it. So if you're a regular, non-pot smoking, averageJoe who likes movies like "The Squid and the Whale," you're not goingto want to waste your time on this. If you like pot, like making facesand hand signals to a camera thrust in your face and think old dickjokes are the funniest thing ever - watch this.
