Let the classics live for ever !

I didn't like the film ...why ? because : I am a big fan for Jack andthe Beanstalk from my childhood.... but this film had made a bigmistake by making the story having a real "historical" :-) roots...
Jack and the Beanstalk is a fairy tale ... why you want to change it ?For me it means there is no ideas and no abilities to write a real newstory ...that is why they begin to mess with the old classic stories...
I had a big hope in this film ...but !!! please leave the old storiesas it is ..and don't change the mind of the children too...
Let the classics live for ever ...
    Thanks

    Nice idea, but too long.

Well that's 4 hours of my life I'll never get back. Shame really asit's a good idea for a film. If only it'd been 2 hours rather than 2 x2 hours. At one point the film goes so slowly it almost stops.
The fairytale of Jack and The Beanstalk was a lie based on the truth. The 15th generation son of Jack has to pay the price for the crimes ofhis distant relative 400 years ago who stole the goose that lays thegolden eggs and the harp that plays for the goose to lay from the bigFRIENDLY giant.
The land of the giants has suffered terribly, crops have failed becausethe harp isn't there to play the special music and the climate haschanged because the golden eggs where burned in a furnace to power theclimate of the land.
As I say, nice idea but tooooooooooooooooo looooooooooooooooong!

    Boring, sappy and badly written

OMG did I wait for the movie to end. The tempo of the movie is veryslow and events unroll boringly. This may very well have been a magicalTV movie but for a movie to watch in one sitting there is no action ordrama to keep you awake. You just sit there hoping that there was aclimax on the way and it never comes.
Of course this was a family movie, too, so I know I shouldn't haveexpected black humor or scary thrills.
In many places the script isn't transparent... you kind of start tothink of the writers' motives on including a twist in the plot whichisn't good. It just wipes away the movie magic.
The actors could've tried harder as well. I know they were making amovie about a fairy tale but this was supposed to be the "real story"so a bit less overacting would've been good. Many of the charactersseemed unnecessary, like the pantheon in the trial.
I liked the cheating and conniving ancestor, though. He was a nicetouch, worth 1 point, 1 point comes for a good idea and 1 for theinvestment in fantasy.

    Modern Classic

When I saw the listing for this film I imagined that it would be anothernetwork fantasy movie crap fest. The casting of Sara and Modine caused me totape it and give it a look. As expected the fantasy land odd folk arebland, rather it is the "real world" segments that are magical (andliterate). Sara (as fantasy land emissary) and Modine are perfect together.

Jack and the Beanstalk may have been a children's story...

I thought that Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story was a fantasticfilm. In terms of editing and cinematography, Hallmark is fast becomingwell - known as producers of quality films that revitalize the oldclassics. Now, in terms of content, "Jack" was a film that I would takemy 10-year-old to see in a theater. Because despite one bed scene whenJack (the forbearer of modern Jack) abandons his beanstalk beauty, Ithink the film really does well at showing what could have happenedafter Jack cut down the beanstalk.
I liked how he built an empire with the goose's eggs. Very intriguing.Of course, nothing I have typed here is a spoiler. In terms of dramaand conflict, the film does exceptionally well. Not only does Jack haveto answer for the sins of the father, but he must survive in theaftermath of his short stay in the city in the clouds. But I reallylike what the story teaches about morals and telling the truth; aboutcompassion and doing what is right, for the sake of living a life ofintegrity and courage.
I would say two thumbs up, but that might violate someone else'scopyright. So, I'll say Well done, Hallmark. When can I submit myapplication to be one of your film writers?

Did anyone else think this was an allegory of --- ?

While watching this movie I couldn't help but think that it was anallegory for the experiences of native Americans upon being invaded.Nobody else saw the movie that way? The effects were great as expectedbut although the lineup of actors was stella, the script/movie couldhave been edited down and polished to about two thirds its length. Andif it was an allegory, it lacked a decent gray perspective, too binary. One thing that the movie does well is that it really makes you think:what if the fairy tale really did have a basis in fact? A minorannoyance was the depiction of the friendly giant after being shown thetraditional version. A character doesn't have to be smiling all thetime like a cross between a weird cult leader and a real estate agentto get across that he's a good guy. Some subtlety, please.

    3 hours too long!

You could only enjoy this film if you had never watched the many otherfantasy films that outdo it. Epic films like Ben Hur or Lawrence ofArabia can easily bear 3 hours but most films are rightly a maximum of2. Some pretentious idiot decided this milk and water tosh was worthyenough to torture an audience for 3 long hours. Worst of all the actionin the second half is tediously slow and entirely unconvincing. Whatyou get is a re-telling of the story (an OK idea)that turns into asoppy, silly, clich?d Hollywood idea of Eco-giants, nice cuddlycreatures who wouldn't hurt a fly. Give us a break! I fast forwardedthe second half! Abbot and Costello did better.

    Highly Creative and Entertaining Reinterpretation

***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS***Brian Henson's remake of this fable is reminiscent of Michael Cohn's 1997`SnowWhite: A Tale of Terror' (Starring Sigourney Weaver). I was thoroughlyenter-tained by the original overlay of treachery, unrequited love, larceny andhomicide. Or is gianticide a word?I also enjoyed the stellar cameos by Daryl Hannah (Thespee) and RichardAttenborough (Magog). Vanessa Redgrave does a great job of setting thetoneatthe throughout the movie with her grave, atmospheric narration. Mia Sarahasn'taged since `Legend'. The pantheon of Celtic and eastern deities /giantswerequite a sight to behold; Gargan with his gaudy head piece, the Stag-headedCernos and Thor's hefty hammer. This somewhat well-paced movie offers an intriguing challenge to the moralveracity of the standard fables. I said 'somewhat' because the conclusionsaggeda little when Magog allowed Mondine to return to earth to live happilyeverafterwith Jack. It seems the ending was conveniently rounded off to meet thestatusquo. I suppose Henson felt the permanent separation of the two may be aweebittaxing on the audience. But generally, the movie was a good Sunday-eveningfare.Perhaps Brian Henson (and the likes of Michael Cohn) will also care toexhumethe other fables from the grimory. That would be highlyentertaining.
If you had the ill fortune of missing part2, the DVD and VHS is available.

Shame it does not appear available in book format

This is an excellent version following the consequences of Jack'sactions many generations ago. Re-working of tales proves theirexistence as timeless classics. It is a terrible shame this is notavailable in book form. As a teaching aid this would be a fantasticopportunity to get children thinking of cause and effect. Criticisingliterature is always a difficult task. This version of events brings inanother perspective of the tale, making Jack the villain, the dishonestthief making a good living from the riches of the 'Giant Kingdom', andthe Giant being a kind hearted man who was originally simply protectingthe riches of the kingdom preventing it from destruction. Does theauthor of the original tale intend the reader to interpret the story assuch? Are these details omitted, leaving to reader assumption? Anycomments would be gladly accepted.

Great movie, a must addition to your collection.

I loved this movie....a must for young and old alike. Kind of restoresyour faith in everything good. This movie is like verification for thefairy tale. Purchase this movie and it will be loved and handed downfor generations to come. It made me believe. Glued to my seat for theentire two night event. Glad it's on DVD so I can see it with myGrands. This is a great movie for family night in. A classic "Yes"ending. If you didn't see the two night event, you missed a once in alifetime cliffhanger for night two. It made you record it if you weregoing to miss the second night. I can't imagine not seeing this movieand experiencing the remarkable way the story came together. Itexplains the gaps in the fairy tale. A must see and buy.

    good

starlet86 from edison NJ hit it on the nose...some not so consistentstory telling...good movie but if you have the DVD - and watch overagain - you will see the incosistencies...
i'm not much for sappy endings...but even that was inconsistent...ifthey went back to giant land - she said they had 7 days which equaled 7years in earth time - then he said there could be several newrobinson's when they get back to earth - how could that be? they stillspent only 7 days on giant land? don't understand that...
i also saw parallels to the movie Hook - which was much better toldthan this one...peter grows up and all...
but in all - i am still a sucker for these types of twists on fairytales...7 is good enough...

    A nice surprise

When I saw "Jim Henson" on the cover I thought of Yoda and Kermit andexpected a puppet movie, entertaining but a bit cheesy and veryartificial. Well, being a fantasy fan I couldn't resist buying the DVD.Boy, was I wrong about the film... Jack and The Beanstalk is a greatfantasy movie. It starts out as an ordinary movie. Then you are toldthe well known fairy tale. Then you are told the tale from *their*point of view, and the movie just takes off from there. It's a lovelymix of modern life and the classical fantasy world.
No movie is perfect, and of course this one does have it's flaws, butthey aren't big and as a family movie it is a great weekend treat.Beware of the length though, nearly three hours.

The Real Story is that Jack and the Beanstalk is still popular

Jack and the Beanstalk is a movie which you can put in the samecategory as the 10th Kingdom. Jack and the Beanstalk is a fairy tale,so normally you might think that this is only for children but themakers of this movie or actually TV-series prove that you can eveninterest adults with a fairy tale. The special effects are very funnyand the story does not bore you for any moment and keeps your attentionfor the full 3 hours it takes. Jack and the Beanstalk is according tomy opinion a masterpiece because it is great to make a movie whichinterests people from you until old and you can find all aspects in themovie like magic, adventure, humor and of course, how we could forgetit Romantic. The qualification from me is 9 out 10 and thatmeans.....well done mates !!!!!!!

a great movie to see with the whole family

Although it's a bit long this is a great movie. I've always been a fanof the Henson studio but this a real highlight. Great actors, greateffects and a good adaptation of the story. Everybody knows the fairytale but this is a very original modern-day spin off. i've already seenit twice and recommended it to most nieces and nephews. Ans they lovedit too. Not to mention their parents. I think the story is a bitcomplex for the under age 8 group but they won't be bored with theeffects. Matthew Modine (one of my favorites ever since I've seen himin HBO's "and the and played on") really makes the most out of thecharacter. But there are more stars in this one. i've already boughtthe DVD and will probably watch it again. 4,5 stars out of 5!!

    a great fairy tale

This is an imaginative take on the Jack and the Beanstalk story. Whileit was made for kids, the story maintains enough complexity to keepadults interested (I'm 19). Plus as a female, I appreciate the factthat it's one of the few stories where (possible spoiler) thedamsel(who's in a different kind of distress than other fairy talewomen) rescues Prince Charming.
But there some flaws with this film that kept me from giving it aperfect 10. Some gripes I have (spoilers ahead):
    1. I'm no math person but why couldn't the writers be consistent withwhen Jack's dad died? One minute, they say he died 20 years ago butthen they say he died when Jack was 14. Since Jack is 37, it shows thatthe writers can't do simple addition. Couldn't they just take twoseconds to do the math?
    2. How the hell does Siggy know about goose and harp? I got theimpression from Wilhemina that Jack's dad didn't believe the story ofthe original Jack. But apparently, Jack's dad told Siggy not to tellhim about the family's dark secret until he was ready. I wish there wasa more believable explanation for Siggy knowing a lot more than heshould.
    3. If Siggy is smart enough to know the all the Robinsons' secret, Ithink he should be able to catch on to the fact that Jack is in lovewith Ondine fairly quickly. I always wondered why he didn't try to killOndine when he was so against Jack having an heir. I understand thatthey had a time limit to the movie and maybe it would have been a bitscary for the little ones. And don't get me wrong, I love Jack andOndine too much to want anything less than a happy ending for them. Butshooting her (or at least threatening to do it) would have been a greatway to kick up the tension/suspense.
    4. Siggy's accent and mannerisms were an attempt at comedy thatcompletely fell flat. It was not funny and was a bit gratuitous.
But if you're a fan of romance, adventure, or just feel-good movies ingeneral, those things shouldn't keep you from enjoying this film.

    Entertaining

Corporate head Jack Robinson is about to discover that fairytales areveryreal in this revisionist take on `Jack and the Beanstalk'.
The film starts off well, with Jack (Matthew Modine) discovering thatlifeisn't as straightforward as he thought. A nice atmosphere is created as amysterious woman, Ondine (Mia Sara looking very cute), appears droppingdirehints as to his family's secret. Eventually Jack discovers the truthbehindhis wealth, and finds out that it is up to him to put thingsright.
The `real world' segments of this movie tend to work best, as Jackstrugglesto come to terms with his discovery that fairy tales are true, with the`fantasy land' segments - mainly due to some variable effects - actuallydetracting from the sense of wonder. While most of the performances arefine(though Modine occasionally seems to be playing Scott Bakula), the guyplaying the original Jack is fairly dire.
What really makes the story work is the idea that fairy tales are historydressed up to be palatable to us (and of course not necessarily reliablyrelated history), and the way that we might exploit magic if it wereavailable to us.
Well worth a watch for fantasy/fairy tale fans, or if you liked thesuperior`The 10th Kingdom'.

another winner from the Henson studio

this mini series was a complete winner from start to finish! awonderful, imaginative retelling of the old fairy tale, that does agreat job of imagining an alternate beginning and then adding a greatstoryline to help finish it out. the special effects were wonderful, including the creatures from the henson studio workroom. an excellentvisualization of the world atop the beanstalk, and the rulers of theirworld. it was tied in very well with the modern world, and MatthewModine made for a very likable Jack, who tries to make things rightagain. Mia Sara as Ondine once again shows that she is best used in alonger premise where she has room to flesh out her character. heracting has definitely improved since Timecop, and she is as beautifulas ever, if not more so!
