    horrible movie

this is a horrible movie. beside the fact that it's full of racism, antisemitism and sexism it's simply a really bad movie (there are exellentsexist films - by and large all billy wilder movies; there are even verygood films full of racism - all these comedies of the 20's, 30's, 40's,50'swith ridiculous dancing blacks or stupid black nannies, etc.). sinceracism, antisemitism and sexism are stupid by itself, the minimal requirementshouldbe that they were presented in a witty way. but this movie is simplyrubbish: poor, senseless plot; flat characters, that is boring stereotypes(sharp contrasts to eizenshtejn's "tipazhi"); pseudo-cool, stupiddialogues.brat-2 is full of whining resentments in view of russia's decline as asuperpower. forget it.

    Interesting, but Average

I'm always intrigued by the type of people who comes on IMDB.com to givemovies perfect "10" vote. As a movie reviewer, I can count on one hand thenumber of films I've given a perfect "10" score to, and I average moremovies in a year than most people will see in their lifetime. So when I seethat nearly 100 people have given BRAT 2 a perfect "10" score, I can onlyassume there is something about BRAT 2 that makes people take the time tocome on this site in order to pad the movie, because the film itself iscertainly not THAT good.
BRAT 2 is about a Russian who comes to America in search of a comrade who isbeing cheated out of his rightful earnings by a ruthless Americanbusinessman. Along the way, the Russian (as a tool of the writer/director)lets us in on the fact that Russians are not used to seeing black people. Orat least, the type of African-Americans that live in America. How else canone explain the rampant racism directed toward blacks in BRAT2?
Besides the obvious, BRAT 2 has some nice sequences. The entire thing, as isthe usual trademark of the writer/director, treats its violence with anonchalant attitude. Of course there's no real realism to the violence, andthe whole thing looks like a big cartoon instead of a gritty crime film, which I thick some people here thinks it is.
All in all, BRAT 2 is certainly not bad. But it's certainly not the greatestthing to come out of Russia, as nearly 100 voters on this board would haveyou believe.
    5 out of 10

    Ivanushka-durachok tale without a moral?

Well, even though, this movie provides with some interesting snapshots ofamerica/russia through the eyes of a rather violent though adventrousyoungman, what is this movie is really about? Does it have a story or is it"Globetrekker" with a russian killer as a guide? The only moral of themovieseem to say is the old one, as is Pushkin "Everything is mine, said thegold/ Everything is mine, said the sword/, Will buy everything, said thegold/ Will take everything, said the sword". Yet the main character seemstobabble about some other higher power that justifies his actions killings, power that is somehow connected with higher "russian" values. It wouldallwork a bit better if the main character had some indication of brainactivity, but at most times (when not pulling the trigger), he looks likeIvanushka -the idiot, who by the motions of luck gets to be in places, winover princesses and simple folks, and balance out injusticies.
Even though, movie lacked in plot, acting, ideas etc., it had two goodaspects to it a) soundtrack; b) it was a smidgen better than the firstinstallation of Brat - or maybe i just got used how bad the originalwas...

    Worst movie of all time?

Apparently Brat 2 was one of the most popular Russian movies of alltime. Unfortunately that little statistic tells more about contemporaryRussians than the film itself. While many American action flicks sufferfrom an overload of clich?s, Brat 2 is an action film (if it can becalled that) with an overload of mean spirited clich?s. It basicallycaters to the very large segment of Russian population that believesthat having racist ideas and expressing them is OK. It shows a greatnumber of very simplistic clich?s and stereotypes about the UnitedStates, Blacks, Russia, Jews, etc. It glorifies the Russianstereotypical traits of rudeness, self righteousness, selfishness, vulgarity, etc. The positive traits (caring for one's own people) arepresented in a very unconvincing manner. When the hero meets a Russianwoman, he shows care for her but due to bad acting and badstorytelling, this event lacks any kind of emotional impact. Aside fromracism, nationalism, populism etc., the film is also guilty ofexceptionally bad film making. The pacing is very bad, making actionsequences seem bland and boring compared to American action film (whichare often boring and repetitive in their own right). The reasons whythe characters behave in a certain way are told - not shown.Relationships pack absolutely no emotional punch - When a characterrefers to someone as a brother we are supposed to understand he caresabout them, but nothing else is shown to make the relationshipplausible. The plot structure itself is incoherent and quite idiotic, with people behaving in completely unbelievable ways throughout thefilm.
Overall, the movie is a work of a racist, a poor film maker, a poorwriter (same person) with poor camera people, poor editors and pooractors. It is fake through out, substituting cheap clich?s for meaning.20 years from now people in Russia will watch this movie, having a hardtime to believe these types of movies were popular in Russia. If Russiawants its own "Birth of a Nation," it should at least make its racistepic a better movie.
In case it is relevant: I'm Russian, studied film, and live in America.I'm not offended by negative portrayals of Russians or Americans, I'moffended by idiocy, bad film making, and substituting clich?s forsubstance.

Over-hyped rubbish with some nice cinematography

This movie is perhaps one of the highest regarded movies amongRussians. Mere criticism of it brings out ultra-nationalistic hatredunlike anything you've ever seen. It does not surprise me that snippetsof this movie posted on youtube elicit multitude of comments like:"F..k Americans" or "F..k Jews" or "F..k n....rs" etc., strewn aroundcomments lamenting the untimely death of the actor.
Imagine "American History X" shown to an audience of xenophobes, racists, and white supremacists WITH all of it's redeeming contexttaken out (e.g. punishment, lesson, redemption). What you're left withis a glamorization of this animal, criminal mindset. Brat 2, whilebeing nowhere near "American History X" in any of it's aspects, managesto inspire and ignite ultra-nationalistic youth of Russia, even today.
I found it impossible to care for these thugs, no matter how "nice" theanti-hero main character was portrayed. He's certainly no "Leon" fromLuc Besson's "The Professional (or "Leon")".
There are very few groups of people this movie managed to avoidinsulting. While painting a stereotypical imagery of America/Americans,it also portrayed your stereotypical Russian punk that grows into amurderous thug. An image easy to embrace for many propaganda-fedsimpletons that this movie was aimed at. Offered a "hero" for themthat's easy to embrace and digest. A xenophobic, racist, criminal, alcoholic, thug with no regard for the law or basic human decency.
I was watching the movie, expecting some secret revelation, some deepmeaning, something other than action sequences tied with lame dialog,self-important soundtrack and body count to rival Arnie in "Commando".However, all I found was an insult of not just everyone that wasobviously insulted... but Russian people as well. Don't waste your timeon this movie.

    BRAT2

I thought the first "Brat" was really good. Too bad I can't really say thesame about it's sequel. Here, director Aleksei Balabanov basically unitedwith the character of his own creation (Danila, that is) under the bannerofRussian nationalism. This movie is anything but politically correct.Danila and his older brother from the first movie go up against everyone, from Ukrainians and Russian mafia, to American cops and, ahem,African-Americans. The basic message here is something like "we areRussians; we may be messed up but we got the truth and the spirit on ourside, while all the rest of you are wicked because you can think ofnothingelse but money and material gains." This invective, of course, is aimedatAmerica and its materialistic culture. The accusations are not totallyunfounded, but "Brat2" really takes them to an overblown, bombastic level, boosting and enflaming Russian patriotic sentiments. For that reason, Ibetthat huge parts ofRussian audiences certainly took it to their liking, although I don'treallyknow how much commercial success the movie has actually enjoyed in Russiaproper. Some good gags are still present, but they are far too few and are evenmoremacabre and virulent than before. The musical score took a downturn aswell, being dominated by cheesy Russian pop stars this time around. I mean,SlavaButusov (whose songs comprised the soundtrack for the first Brat) is noTchaikovsky, but he very well may seem so compared to the music we havehere("Good Bye America" and song by Aukcyon notwithstanding) . The atmosphereand visual style of the first Brat was also lost. Balabanov's shots ofMoscow and Chicago don't even come near what he was able to pull off inSt.Petersburgh. And, of course, the whole movie is not nearly as engrossing and compelling as the firstinstallment. In interviews, Balabanov was saying that initially he wasgonna stop after the first Brat, but then the idea for the follow-uphappened to materialize. Well, he should've stuck to originalconsiderations. Or maybe the man who gave us "Of Freaks And Men" justwanted to go commercial (in Russian terms, that is). Then again, it maydepend on how you interpret this whole Russian patriotism thing. As farasI am concerned, the "kirdyk" to America didn't turn out to bethatexciting.

    Brother2&1-Russian films

I feel that these films are great. Two brothers who make a living asMafia hit men. I'm English so I don't fully understand the in-fightingbetween the Russian Mafia that goes on. The violence and shoot-outs areexcessive but maybe that is the way it happens over there. The music isespecially good even though I can't understand what the words are.Sergei Bodrov (The main character) who plays Danila Bogrov in bothfilms is an excellent actor. It's a regret because there are probablyloads of excellent foreign-speaking films out there that people couldenjoy but can't be marketed.
The problem with both films is the fact that there are elements ofracism involved, plus the fact that World War II is often mentioned.I'm not sure, but the War must have affected them so completely thatthey still go on about so much, especially in Brother 2. A lot of theweapons that these guys use against each other are WWII orientated.Russian mind-set must be different to our own but these two films aremust watch.
Brother 1 concentrates purely on St. Petersburg, but Brother 2 involvesMoscow & Chicago, especially concentrating on the differences betweentwo of the major cities in the World. I don't want to spoil the filmfor you too much but Danila walks into a Black bar in downtown Chicago.Everyone stops talking & looks at him. Being new to America, he doesn'tget that it's wrong. There's humour involved as well as violence.
Both films are violent but I guess it's the way the Russian underworldworks.

    Payback

When I've seen Brat, I thought it was pretty silly. I just didn't like it.Though this spring we got another part of Danila's (this cute lovely guy)adventures. I thought this would not be better, so I haven't seen it...Butrecently we had it on the TV and I just watched it, because I heard peopleliked it. So I did. And I must tell ya that this is good done job. I don'teven know what is so amazing there for me. Maybe I just liked the idea, because it really seemed great. And all those jokes. Damn, only Russianscanunderstand it (well, the movie is Russian. For us.). One Bagrov-older bro(Sukhorukov) is big joke. I mean, almost everything he says is funny. No,you better know what the joke is about... Oh, yeah, forgot: maybeAmericansdon't like it. But don't they always make Russians "monsters that aregoingto destroy the world" in the movies? We have our own opinion, so sorry, guys! :))

Special for me and just a good movie for the rest

Brat 2 (Brother 2) is a sequel to the 1997 film Brat (Brother). I am afan of Bodrov and enjoyed all the movies he made and has acted induring his unfortunately short career. Without a doubt he was arevolutionary director and actor for Russia's film-making and this filmpresents him in one of his best roles. To me, this movie is specialbecause I very much love its genre and the way it was presented. It isless realistic than Brat, but contains more action and more memorablemoments. Anyone who is willing to look at a life of a simple guy whothinks his life is less important than that of his friends and lovedones will not be disappointed by the presentation of the film. Danila'scharacter is very different and memorable; for me, he is truly an idoland every time I watch the movie I can only wish I had his big heartand bravery. Because I love this film so much I am giving it a perfectscore, but disregarding my connection to former USSR I still recommendit highly. Brat 2 10/10.

One of the best movies of all time

I may be saying this with a bit of bias but this is my favorite movieof all time. Unlike a Hollywood movie it does not picture the world aperfect place but instead it pictures people and the world the way theyare, racist, hateful, etc. Racism is present in any country you go to,and if you tell me different you are just to ignorate to realize it.This picture depicts the American and Russian sycie and how western andeastern thinking are different from one another. I have only watchedthis in the original Russian version and would recommend any Russianspeaking person to see it, not sure how accurate the subtitles are andhow much justice they give to the movie.

A good movie, for Russians at least.

I enjoyed Brat 2. It certinly much better than most modern Russian movies. If you grew up in a Russian home, you'll feel immediatly at home with thestyle and psyche behind the film. I think that if Tarantino was a bit lessintelligent and Russian, he would be making movies like this: action, somemessages about life and a whole lot of gags that only Russians canunderstand. This movie was not meant to be artsy, as some Americans mayview. It was filmed solely with the Russian-speaking public in mind. No,it's not politicly correct by any means, but that's realistic, and a nicechange of pace for this movie goer. I don't really know how ANYONE couldsayit antisemitic. I'm Jewish and I didn't see anything offending in it. The"Fashist" (Russian phonetic here) was funny, if you ask me. He even seemedalmost Jewish.
But I can see how some one who does not understand Russian culture verywellmay misunderstand and be offended by it.
    Cest la vive.

Best russian comedy seen in a long time

If you're looking for a solid-quality russian movie like the original'Brat'was, forget it. 'Brat 2' isn't made for high-lobed critics, movieaffictionados, or even adults for that matter. Whom it is made for, however,is highschool students and anyone with a sense of irony and appreciationforcomedy. Danila is back, and so is his gangster brother 'Tatarin'. Thestoryis ridiculous - Danila's former C.O. is killed by people who don't want topay back the money they owe a hockey player living in America. Danilatakesit on himself to correct the injustice and leaves off to U.S. with'Tatarin'. What follows is Balaganov's (producer) hilarious satire onrussian emigrant's view of american life, heavily dosed with politicallyincorrect shoot-outs. The movie is very funny, although russian-americanswill probably see it as a drama and not comedy.

    Take me to Hollywood!!!!!

Better made—at least in one certain sense—it's more ably, deftlymade,in terms of conventional thrillers, than the first installment.Andalso,as I just put it,also more conventional. It's differently pacedthan the first installment.A Russo-American jam,it should of lookedlike a weird cartoon;as such, the patriotic overtones sound as crap.Fora quite naive thriller, there are so many things to be said for andagainst. It is,in a conventional way, more amusing, and certainly lessscary than the first movie ….It pedals with conviction on somepatriotic clich?s;it also tries to naively raise against somecommonplaces of the political-correctness (e.g.,the episode with theAfro-American infuriated by Danila's racist use of the words …).Butthis populist side is part of the franchise's mind—it is conceived as apopulist/popular thriller with patriotic undertones;as such, all thesehave their places in the movie's notion. This ingenuity isdelectable, till it starts undermining itself by pretending to be whatit is not.The concept of the second Brat is somehow 'epigonic, with thissecond-hand vigilantism. And Danila is deprived of any human or epic orthriller-minded dimension. The first installment worked in astraightforward jail-bent way;the second brings this useless andconventional confrontation that finally shows nothing.
It is like the director dreams that Bodrov is Eastwood. But Bodrov doesnot think that about himself. And this was not the pace for such amovie.I also disliked the incensing of Danila as if he was Rambo or alegendary desperado, and the complicity with the fans and the baksheeshfor the fans ('you already knew that Danila likes Nautilus and DDT,didyou not?')—this is a banger.
The first installment has been naturalistic, brutal, grisly andharsh—its conventions were that of the jail's and the underworld'sfolklore. That popular tone rang true.It was a tested thing. It was anessayed thing. You do not like to spend time with Danila, but his storyhad that strong popular intonation. It was scary in a Gorky and popularway. In this second installment, they try to show Danila as beingmythical,as being Rambo. But this is certainly not the actor for a Rambofranchise, nor for an urban thriller in the Rourke,Gere,Willisway.Danila is a convention, the lead in a tale from post-Glasnost'surban folklore. Therefore,I think the second installment is a littleself-complacent.It does not have the grisly tone of the previousfilm, and it does not find another tone.It simply conforms to a label.Itis conceived just as regular thrillers are conceived. What can I see, itis almost as if they beg for a Hollywood remake.I hope that will neverhappen. Some things are a little programmatic and didactic (e.g.,thefriendship between Danila and the American trucker). This secondinstallment makes obvious the limits and limitations of the concept—itdoes not work very well in any environment—and Danila is,as avigilante, obviously not as interesting as Bronson or Rourke. A bum hasno charisma,of course, and Danila is supposed to be a cold bum,not PaulKersey. This is unsatisfying,as Bodrov has the guts for action roles, orphysical roles,as they called them, the Eastwood/Gibson/Willis/Bronsonway ….The director seems not to have found the scale of this movie;butspeaking only of the American part of the film,it should have been madeas that Coens' thing from the '80s,Blood Simple—yeah ,it should oflooked like that one,and it should of chosen that scale. Otherwise, itis a well-made thriller, very no-nonsense as approach.I was alone, and alittle groggy, when I saw this movie;but I think that, seen with otherpeople, many of its deliberately comical sequences would provokelaughter.
I would of liked much more violence and action;the movie sets therules, and then it is not up to them. It should of played as amachine-gun;it does not.It only plays like harmonica.Take the sequencewhere Danila's brother fires through the car's back window after hebreaks it;it is ludicrous. The director chosen to make a vigilantestuff, then he pumped phrases about loving one's country. This is notfair. He has chosen to play on foreign ground, and,to some extent,he haslost the game.
A single word for the final:if the director made it only for themoney,it is entirely OK and I do not blame him for this.

"BRAT 2" is the best movie since "BRAT". I loved it. May be it looked likeafairy tale as One-man gang destroyed whole Mafia. But it was MAD. I've seenthis movie may be 50 times and everytime I turn it On I still wanna see itagain. I hope they gonna make part three, because it didn't look thatDanila's adventure is over. A Milestone

This movie was a real milestone, it marked the end of Yeltsin's era.Like the part one is a snap-shot of 90s, this one is the reflection of,on the one hand, started changes of RF internal and external policy. Ofcourse, partly they were (as usual) just proclaimed changes, but itdoesn't matter in this case because, on the other hand, Brat-2 showednation's feelings and hopes of those days. As far as I rememberBalabanov himself said something like "The movie was just the answer tothe state of public opinion". Also keep in mind it was time just afteraggression of US against Yugoslavia and time of victories of federalforces in the second Chechen war - everyone still remembered thehumiliation of the first war as well as all previous decade . Now youcan imagine the eye we watched Brother-2 with. And you can understandwhat we felt… The main message of the movie is Danila's words: "So Ithink that the truth is the power: the one who has truth he isstronger". This phrase has become a byword. In fact, all the movie isabout that: neither ascendancy and criminal (personified as "NewRussians" and Ukrainian bandits), nor money and hypocrisy (Americansmooth operators) can defeat the truth. The idea is shown with use ofviolence. This point was subject of much criticism, but it's certainlynot the main thing in the film, at most the decoration for its message. If you saw Brat-2 you would understand me. Another idea is that you canfind good and sincere people in any country, any nation and any order. It doesn't matter what all damned governments and bigwigs do: goodhearts will always find each other in this cruel world. In addition,Brat-2 is full of sentences, including humorous, which became famous:the above-mentioned "truth", "Russians never desert their own in thewar", "You bitches will answer to me for Sevastopol!" and many others.
So. Despite some rude episodes I disliked, despite (I think) excessiveviolence shown, I give it 10 of 10. Brother-2 deserves.

One of the best Russian movies ever.

Well, as promised in first part, Russian folk hero Danila goes to USAto revenge a friend and give "kirdyk"(apocalypse) to America. Everyonewho stands in his way is done for. He meets and gets to know RussianPamela Anderson look-alike and foxy black girl. In the firefight, nocops, neither negro gun-runners and pimps, not even Russian, Ukrainianand Italian mafia can stop him. He get to the BIG BOSS and demands hismillion dollars, and then goes home victorious. As we can see from theplot, it is kind of a fairy-tale that is transformed into theRP(Russian-Power) action flick. Although the plot is unrealistic atbest, everything else is top-notch - the movie has best Russian actors(Sergej Bodrov Jr. R.I.P.,Sergej Makovetsky, Viktor Sukhorukov),director (Alexej Balabanov), and excellent soundtrack. And of courselots Russian humor. Also some episodes are just unforgettable - like"weapon-bying" or "child poem". And of course an epic showdown in Mtroclub. 10/10.

    Better than the first film

This film seems to me better than "Brat" and Balabanov'some recentfilms("Voyna" and "Mne ne bol'no").
Danila, the hero played by Sergei Bodrov Jr.here reminds us of somewell known character from action films(Travis from "Taxi Driver", orbetter to say,James Bond from "007" series).Hero with firearms, whonever loses in love affairs and in gunfight, who revenges his friend'sdeath, protects potential victims of villains, saves good people, andthen goes back to motherland with new girlfriend. The villains here arean American cunning businessman and his mafia-like bodyguards, who areexploiting poor Russians in various ways. Too simple to be commented.
But in fact "Brat 2" is not so simple. Danila doesn't kill thatAmerican businessman, after having managed to convince him that moneydoesn't make a man stronger than those who are with truth. But hiselder brother, who had come to America with the same purpose asDanila(avenge) is already been infected with "money worship" to the endof the film.
Danila remains as he was, to be Russian "muzhik(bumpkin),sympatheticand sometimes violent, tactful and full of wisdom of life, but not atall refined or intelligent.
The last sequence with inserted song of Russian rock band NautilusPompilius is really great, whole seeming reference to American andWestern action films gets toppled upside-down,because when credittitles appear, suddenly the song declare:"Boodby, America, where I'venever been.". In fact, the song was made in 1980s by provincial youngmusicians, who have never been to America. Russian "Muzhik" wonfictional America and its soulless capitalism in the end.

Cross between Doom and the original Brat

The second installment (well, you don't really expect Balabanov to stopmilking this storyline, do you?) in the Brat series is more expensive anditshows. The movie is glitsier and the guns are bigger, as is the body count.Basically, the plot is as simple and formulaic as it gets - an unlikelyRussian Duke Nukem Danila Bagrov goes after the killers of his war-timefriend. Reunited with his "brother" from the original Brat, played byVictorSukhorukov, Danila runs, shoots and blows up things - now THIS side of thePond. This is dynamic movie, done much better than most contemporaryRussianimports, and is anything but politically correct - be it the mounting bodycount or the amount of racial slur. In the first movie Bagrov's contempt ofthe "dark-skinned" people was evident in one small episode, in this one hereally gets going at - what's the word? - African-Americans :) But unlessyou are that deep into PC go see this movie - it's like watching somebodyreally good playing Doom, over his shoulder.

It Was a Strange Look at America

I thought that this film gave off a somewhat one-sided look ofAmericans. And while that is probably no surprise, what got me was theconstant examples of how we were portrayed. From the beginning, we'relabeled as conniving swindlers who are just out to cheat people any waywe can. From there we are given examples of pimps who seem to rely onfoul language (however Americans do have some extremely colorfulmetaphors), prostitutes, crooked cops and truckers who are more goofythan anything. I liked the film, I enjoyed the plot and the action, andthought that overall, the movie was solid. It just nagged at me the waywe were made to look. That's the filmmakers discretion, I know, but Ijust wanted a chance to say it.
