    Quite disappointing... in a way

Just saw it at the world premiere in Berlin. Well, this movie has thelabels 'Martin Scorsese' and 'Leonardo DiCaprio' written all over it.It is a good movie. It is a bad Scorsese movie. If you're into horrormovies as I am, you will know the plot after about 15 Minutes. Thereare tons of Mad Asylum - movies out there, and this is just one ofthem. Take for instance the crappy 'Madhouse' - Movie with JoshuaJackson, or any other movie in this vein. Shutter Island is theluxury-packed, atmospherically gloomy version of these movies with goodactors. Just because it says Scorsese/DiCaprio doesn't make aB-Horror-Flick something special. And Shutter Island is nothing morethan a nice Asylum-Horror-Movie. If it had some no-name director andcast, it would have gone straight to DVD.
You can watch it, it is nice, never boring, the atmosphere is bleak andtherefore good, but Scorsese usually delivers something special.Shutter Island is not.

    Terrible movie

Another terrible horror/Drama, not worthy of a "B" rating. Do not wasteyour time on this movie. I expected Martin Scorsese to provide asomewhat entertaining movie but this movie went from bad to worse.Leonardo Dicaprio was definitely not at his best in this role but I'mnot sure anyone else could have done any better with this script.Getting back to the movie, I have to say that if the ending was changedit would have been a somewhat bearable film to sit through. I can'tbelieve it has a positive rating on IMDb, although IMDb ratings havelet me down before more than once. I don't put much faith in themanymore. Again if your looking for some entertainment this weekenddon't waste your time/money on this movie.

Not bad, but for Scorsese that's not good enough

What is nagging me the most about this film is that it is not reallybad, it's just not particularly good, and at times it gets ratherboring.
Many reviewers are stating that the plot "twist" is predictable withinthe opening moments of the film, and they are not wrong. Unfortunately, once the twist is guessed at (or even as it is revealed in the film)all that is left is some brooding cinematography and an overtlydramatic music score that fails to excite. There are some brutal WW2flashback moments, but their relevance is questionable and rather thanadd weight to De Caprio's character and the plot they are more likelyto frustrate an audience who wished there was more to them. Some of theimagery throughout is brutal and chilling, but it does not go farenough when the plot itself fails to unnerve. Moments of exposition aretoo drawn out, De Caprio is good but I've seen his range of expressionsnumerous times, Kingsley is convincing but his character is barelyfleshed out....
From the opening moments it is clear that this film is directed by abrilliant film maker, but as the hours drag on one starts to ponder ifthe script were written by a brilliant screen writer. Ultimately, dwelling on the thought that Scorcese could be behind something soaverage is likely to drive a person insane. Best avoided.

The trailer is a 10, the movie is a 4.

Despite the intriguing trailers to this Scorsese film, it was not worthspending the money on. I thought this movie would be a slam dunk, instead it was a slam junk. The movie was not suspenseful, exciting, and thrilling as I had hoped. An idea of a isolated island, creepymental patients and missing woman set in the 50's. Great concepthowever the story line fell apart. I will say the acting was good,Leonardo DiCaprio and Michelle Williams gave great performances. I didall I could to keep my eyes open through this 2hr 18min movie. I wasleft confused and unsatisfied. Trust me, you will be too.
I suggest you spend your money on Avatar and wait for Shutter Island onDVD.

Please, just one more flashback/dream sequence

Please, just one more flashback/dream sequence.
The 400 that we had just weren't enough.
Oy! They just go on and on...
This is Scorsese with his heaviest hand ever.
An hour of plot with an extra hour of flashbacks makes watching this agrueling test of cinema endurance.
Every time I was pulled into the story and the characters - POP! -another flashback/dream sequence to stop the story cold and pull me outof the narrative.
Some nice character work by folks like the under-appreciated JohnCarroll Lynch and some spooky-cool visuals keep the movie from becomingthe movie-going equivalent of root canal.
When it was all said and done I had wished that my going to the movietheater and forking over $12 was really just a dream sequence of themovie that is my life. But nope, I just checked my wallet. Scorsese'sfingerprints are all over it. Again. Didn't I learn anything from TheDeparted?

You won't want to close the shutters on this one!!

FOR MORE REVIEWS FEEL FREE TO VISIThttp://rantsreviews4filmnuts.blogspot.com/ The dream team of Scorseseand Dicaprio deliver their most thrilling and original effort yet inthe form of the physcological mindfield that is Shutter Island.
US Marshal Teddy Daniels is called to a remote island to investigatethe disappearance of a murderess from an institute for the criminallyinsane. Upon arrival Daniels soon begins to realise that nothing is asit seems, nobody can be trusted and danger lurks around every corner.
Like Shutter Island the location, Shutter Island as a film is a richtapestry of intrigue in which the viewer never feels safe in it'spresence. Also like the island itself you never quite know what toexpect from the film or even how to define it. As the story unfolds thegenre you think you are watching is constantly evolving. Is it grittyfilm noir, closed circled crime fiction, cop drama or sensationalisedpulp? Nobody knows genre better than Martin Scorsese and this very giftenables him to mess with the viewers expectations as he presents uswith convention and then turns it upside down.
When it comes to suspense Shutter Island by far surpasses all othercinematic offerings of the past decade. From the opening scene to therolling of the credits the viewer is bombarded with a plethora of plottwists, red herrings and interconnected sub plots as the narrativegrows deeper and more intense. To discuss said narrative would merelyspoil the experience for the viewer as the total unpredictability ofthe films plot is one of it's finest assets.
Dicaprio once again turns in an awards worthy turn as the films damagedprotagonist Teddy Daniels. Few actors can emote so much in such asubtle manner without chewing the scenery. The pain expressed inDicaprio's eyes will haunt you for long after the lights come up.Daniels narrative is complex but Dicaprio handles the progression ofhis character like the pro that he is. It is hoped that Dicapriodoesn't follow in his directors footsteps in being relegated to alwaysbeing the bridesmaid for the coveted Oscar. Fingers crossed thatShutter Island remains in voters minds for the 2011 awards ceremony asDicaprio's performance is one of the best of this or any year. MarkRuffalo lends excellent support as Daniels partner Chuck Aule. It'sdefinitely Ruffalo's best performance to date and one hopes that hewill be offered more roles of substance after this outing. Rounding outthe supporting class is the suitably intriguing Ben Kingsly as theresident head physcologist, a scene stealing Ted Levine as a suspiciouswarden and Michelle Williams as Daniels deceased wife. Brief cameos byJackie Earle Haley as a patient and Patricia Clarkson as a mysterywoman are masterclass acting at it's finest and enrich the quality ofthe picture.
Cinematographer Robert Richardson does a superb job of making ShutterIsland the foreboding and maze of fear that it appears to be. All otherdepartments also seem to come up trumps with the epic musical score ofthe picture in need of a notable mention.
Shutter Island is one of the most original, unsettling and thoughtprovoking film experiences you are ever likely to get. The intricacy ofthe plot plays out like clockwork, showcasing film making at it'sfinest. One of the must sees of the year and definitely worthy of beingconsidered a modern classic, here's hoping the Dicaprio/Scorsesepartnerships continues for years to come.

    Scorsese's best maybe ever

Well, just walked out of the theater, not really sure how to sum up themovie I just experienced. Yes, I say "experienced." That's what it was,an experience. Too bad it's not included in this year's Oscars; therest of the year had better be good or it's all over. Why gush overthis movie? The story took me places I haven't been before, andDiCaprio is already on next year's best actor list. Disturbing, thoughtprovoking and smart to say the least, I didn't see what was coming.
The acting, every shot, classic MS. He gets you in the mood from thestart and keeps you where he wants you...you aren't allowed but a smallchuckle from time to time, but it quickly subsides and you are backinto creep mode. A different story from what we are used to withScorcese, but he has to be put up there with the best ever. Go watchbefore someone spoils the ending for you.

    Not one of his greats.

Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island reminds me of Hitchcock's successfulVertigo, Psycho, and most of all, Spellbound, without the success. Thementally unstable characters who provided Hitchcock hints of utterdepravity in those classics in Shutter Island mainly serve facile plottwists.
Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a federal marshal who, with hispartner, Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) goes to Shutter Island AshecliffeHospital for the criminally insane in 1954 to investigate the escape ofa notorious murderess of her own three children. Almost everyone atthat Boston harbor institution besides the patients seems a bit offcenter, even Teddy, who brings some psychological baggage to the job.
While the cinematography is appropriately claustrophobic and the 19thcentury industrial brick insane asylum and its accompanying Civil Warfort reminiscent of Silence of the Lambs with a touch of Alcatraz, theplot twists are indiscriminately telegraphed while Teddy's recurringvisions of his deceased wife are too many and annoying. As the residentshrink, Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley) is much smoother than Lambs' Dr.Chilton (Anthony Heald) but not half as fun. Nor is there a villain whocan come close to Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter. Although Teddy is thecenter of the film, Scorsese spends too many frames on torturedclose-ups, as if he were making sure that DiCaprio is nominated for anOscar next year.
The film should have expanded the role of Dr. Naehring, head of thehospital, because the estimable Max von Sydow could have saved the filmfrom boredom as the twists are telegraphed obviously and way toobluntly. In its favor, Scorsese plays deftly, if not a bit tooobviously, with different camera angles such as bird's eye and visualimages such as bright red blood, reminiscent of the stunning work inSam Mendes' American Beauty.
When you've directed Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, and Raging Bull, youhave a tough time topping yourself. Shutter Island is not a film to beashamed of; it's just not as good as his greats.

The best thriller since "The Silence of the Lambs"

Martin Scorsese has done it again! He has crafted one of the bestpsychological thrillers to hit screens since The Silence of the Lambs.Shutter Island sizzles with pure excitement, tension, and powerfulperformances. Starring Academy Award Nominee Leonardo DiCaprio as TeddyDaniels, a Federal Marshall visiting Shutter Island in order to find anescaped patient, Rachel Salondo, who vanished without any trace. Alongwith his partner Chuck (Mark Ruffalo), the two uncover a web of liesand corruption that may have taken more a toll on them than initiallyexpected.
Shutter Island is one of the rare occurrences captured on film thatI've seen in my lifetime, which could land its way into a cinematicclassic in years to come. Scorsese has taken liberties and chances wehaven't seen of him before and in this latter part of his career, heshows no sign of losing his touch. Teaming with writer Laeta Kalogridisto adapt this chilling novel by Dennis Lehane, Scorsese has set the barfor the rest of the films of 2010, and that bar is set extremely high. The film succeeds so masterfully thanks to three of Scorsese's crew.Cinematographer Robert Richardson shows the most beautiful camera workto grace the screen since Roger Deakins' The Assassination of JesseJames by the Coward Robert Ford. His artistic choices in shotsinstitutes the most immense amount of tension and elegant work of hiscareer. The great film editor Thelma Schoonmaker, one of Scorsese'sgreat tools on his belt, shows once again, she is one of the best inbusiness. She chops shots together as she was dicing up onions, nevercracking under the pressure and keeping it all at a well constructed, sublime piece of art. The last pillar in the arrangement of the film isComposer Robbie Richardson, who goes back to the root of filmencompassing the fierce brutality of Kalogridis' screenplay.
Besides the heavy hitters of the picture behind the scenes, theperformances of the cast are all top notch. DiCaprio has given one ofhis strongest works yet. He fights his way through the screen, takingno prisoners along the way and digging deep into a role where no signof Leo is to be found. Ruffalo, definitely one of the most underratedactors in Hollywood nails his role. He strings us along with him, wherethe more we know, the more we don't want to let go. Ben Kingsley, asnaturalistic and effortless as he can be, still proves he's one of thebest working actors of the last generation. Kingsley as the mysteriousand deviant Dr. Cawley, keeps us at arm's distance and doesn't let usin until it's under his own terms. Michelle Williams has her finestmoments captured on film of her career. She's untouchable, intangible, and nearly unrecognizable as a haunting wife in the life of Teddy.Williams proves to be seconds away from becoming the biggest thing thatHollywood has to offer. Max Von Sydow and Emily Mortimer are bothmemorable and adequate in their respective roles. Even with the briefperformances of Academy Award Nominees Patricia Clarkson and JackieEarle Haley that blaze their way through the screen, they leave amassacre of audience members only wanting more.
The question of the minds of many viewers is, should this film havebeen pushed back from its original October 2009 release and be incontention for next year's Oscar ceremony? I can't for the life of methink why this wouldn't be pushed as the big juggernaut of the studio'sawards season. With the Academy Awards keeping the ten Best Picturenominees for the ceremony of 2011, this may be the first spot taken inthe lineup before this year's ceremony hasn't even occurred. It's abrilliant piece of cinema, with the sheer tenacity and gumption tostand the tests of time as one of the best psychological picturescreated in ages. Some may argue that's predictable, some may argue itwasn't "scary"; like they thought it would be; it's a surprise view butone worthy of the highest praise.

Shutter Island is another very good collaboration of Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio

When I agreed to watch this Martin Scorsese/Leonardo DiCaprio film withmy movie theatre working friend today, the "Skip It" reviews of MichaelPhillips and A. O. Scott were still on my mind but since I'd like tomake up my own mind about anything, I thought, "What the Hell." I'lladmit also up front that while I almost fell asleep sometimes duringthis, by the time of the Big Revelation, I was wide awake and wantingto learn more. Also, despite my almost sleepy demeanor, I wasenthralled by DiCaprio's lead performance, by Scorsese's direction, aswell as fine supporting performances by Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Maxvon Sydow, Jackie Earle Haley, Emily Mortimer, Patricia Clarkson, andMichelle Williams. Nothing much more to say except this was anothervery compelling opus by the great director and his frequent leading manthat I highly recommend.

Psychological thriller that makes you think and comes together well...

Set in a time of an ideological shift from inhumane psycho surgery(such as lobotomies) to psychotropic medication, combined with therapy, this thriller takes us on a psychological journey. In a time whenmovies are becoming less and less thought provoking, it was a pleasureto see this movie tonight.
Martin Scorsese, the man who brought us Goodfellas, Casino, TheDeparted, No Direction Home, the Aviator and many classics, again teamsup with Leonardo DiCaprio, and his direction is beautifully haunting. The dream sequences, "flashbacks" to Nazi death camps, and shots aroundthe island are all well done.
This movie is not the standard fare, but leaps and bounds above any newrelease in the past few years. I can't stop thinking about it and hopeHollywood sees there is still an appetite for something more than carchases, silly comedies, and romantic fluff.

    Outstanding

If this movie is not worthy of many awards then none are. Its just hasit all! Hard to give a review without spoiling the movie for viewers. So I'll just say this, it is a "don't miss" with multiple of 10! Theactors and I mean all of them have outdone themselves! The locationsand camera work are surreal and vivid. You try to figure out what isgoing on and somewhere during the movie you might figure it out, partially, but the final scene just leaves you dumbfounded. Just agreat film that may rival "Chinatown" and certainly equals it! Justshell out the bucks for this one and you will not regret it! No oneactor carries the film, its like a ensemble but without the heavies andwith a cast of great character actors at their best!

    Over-hyped, wretched refuse

I really don't know what to say.
I just know I would have like to read my review before plunking down$50 to go see this movie.
My wife and I came away from this movie laughing, and not because ofits comedic genius. This movie was terrible; especially when youconsider the immense talent featured on the screen and behind thecamera. This was Leo's worst, most forces, over-acted performance thatI've ever seen. There was no suspense; no intrigue, no scary moments. We had most of it figured out within 30 minutes.
Leo showed up in the final scenes and the final reveal was moving, butit was far too little, far too late.

Martin Scorsese has created a Thrilling Epic...

As a fan of Martin Scorsese, I was became quite sad when I found outthat his newest film would be delayed till the following February.
Well it is now February and I must say that this is one great motionpicture.
Nothing on Earth would destroy my expectations for this film.
Scorsese uses the same thrilling formula that made 1991's "Cape Fear"work so well. He puts you on the edge of your seat and puts in on ahuman level.
Never have I experienced a film like "Shutter Island". It is a filmthat never gives up on its audience. It always keeps you guessing andalways changes your perspective. It always has you choosing what youbelieve in.
DiCaprio turns in one of his best performances as Teddy. MartinScorsese's direction is pure dynamite. The cinematography by RobertRichardson is breathtaking. And the music is on the spot.
This movie is a Masterpiece of Thrillers

    Boring, stupid, tedious, and anti-American

Martin Scorsese will continue to be worshiped by Liberals so long asthey remember his profane Jesus movie. They are thus condemned to suckup to awful drivel like Shutter Island.
Who could think that a movie about a mysterious island with a mentalinstitution on it, being investigated by two hotshot federal agents;how could this be boring? Trust me, or suffer for it.
Notning interesting happens after 30 minutes except a brief climb up asheer cliff.
Besides being boring, the movie is anti-American in its John Kerry-likespin that American soldiers mass-murdered the German guards at Dachau.Never happened, captain. Even though this is taken back later in themovie, the image of the lie stands tall.
It is also one more movie that underlines the lie that World War II wasabout the death camps and the Jews. It wasn't. It was about thebombings of London, Rotterdam, the invasion of Czecholslvakia, etcetera. Seriously, nobody back then was concerned about the Jews.
In Shutter Island, pretty much everybody goes nuts. Reality is mixedwith hallucinations, but in no way is this made interesting.
One last pot shot: I used to like Mark Ruffolo, but not anymore. Toomany of these Hollywood empty-heads can't keep their traps shut. So OKjust like Sheryl Crow and her one piece of toilet tissue tirade hasruined her music for me, so Mr. Ruffolo's desire that Bruce ought marryKevin and that Megan ought marry Mary Ann. Go for it, Mark, if that'syour thing; too late to put a sock in it.

    Scorsese Horror Flick Borders Mediocrity

Shutter Island, Scorsese's fourth film featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, recounts the unnerving of a U.S. Marshal with his arrival at theAshecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane to investigate thedisappearance of an inmate. The film is categorized as a horror filmbut falls more appropriately under the rubric, psychological thriller.Despite an all-star cast and a variety of technically adept cinematicfeatures, the film falls short for a Scorsese work and even shorter fora horror film.
Teddy Daniels, the protagonist played by DiCaprio, is partnered withChuck Aule, (Mark Ruffalo) in this investigation. Daniels' ownpsychologically debilitated state is made apparent through recurringgraphic flashbacks of his involvement in WWII and throughhallucinations of his recently deceased wife. The film opens withDaniels vomiting on the ferry destined for the island, the camerafollowing him under deck as he tries to gather himself. Suchvulnerability does not serve him well at the outset and beyond andsuggests possibly that he might some day be greeted as an inmatehimself. Indeed, upon entry into the facility, he is welcomed by asetting of low ceilings and chains as if, in time, he might findhimself, given this introductory psychological makeup, restrained bythem. Such symbolism is only the beginning of what makes the outcome ofthe film remarkably predictable...

    Good But Not Great

A hurricane is approaching and patient Rachel Solando escapes from aninsane asylum that's located in an island. She didn't try to swim awaybecause the current would have killed her and washed her ashore. So,where is she? That's what U.S. Marshalls Edward "Teddy" Daniels(Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) are trying to findout.
Throughout their investigation they begin to wonder if Solando reallydid escape. Does a Rachel Solando even exist? Perhaps it's a trap.Someone wants them on that island and isn't going to let them escape. And with the hurricane nearby they couldn't even if they wanted to.
That's the mystery in director Martin Scorsese's first film since2006's The Departed, the movie for which he finally won an AcademyAward. Like The Departed and even his 1991 film, Cape Fear, it's athriller that'll have audiences on the edge of their seat. However, itis the weakest of the three. If this movie has one flaw (and it's onlyONE flaw) it's that it relies too much on the mystery. Once you knowthe ending there's no reason to re-watch the film. It's two hours andtwenty minutes of DiCaprio running around a mental institute. Asidefrom two or three humorous scenes nothing distracts the plot. It's onautopilot. So, it's a really good movie but a B-plot away from beinggreat.

A relevant movie for the times

Lately, Bollywood has churned out movies with tremendous show of skinand exhibitionism, but this movie is such a stark contrast and is oneof the reasons that it works. Being one of the first Hollywood movies Ihave ever watched, I didn't know what to expect.I have to admit I wasenchanted and awed beyond my expectation by the way the brilliantstoryline, the excellent acting by Lenard Cappo, Bob Nero and theothers, plus the superb editing and production combined, to create themost near perfect film that not only Indian families can relate to butevery family from every culture, race and nation, which is excellent initself.I cried like a baby! Hollywood movies have a new big fan in mebecause of this excellent production, Baghban.
Sir Cappo with his legendary performances has once again proved that heis the star of all the times and the legend of the new millennium. Whatshould I say about Ben Kingsley, he really knows the magic how to grasptime in his hand and as time has passed he has really become morebeautiful. Max von Sydow's performances were also fabulous. And aboutJackie Earle Haley, this is the first film where I have liked hisperformances.
Jackie Earle Haley has acted splendidly, by far one of his best moviesever, he even sounds good in the 3 songs he has song. The story linegets a little weak towards the end, yet a simple and clear story ofpresent times. The only two faults I found with this stellar story of afilm is the fact that it was a tad-bit too long, but most importantlyThis is a movie that will be a classic with the inimitable Jackie EarleHaley who also has become a singer another feather in the cap of thistalented actor. Though similar in content to "Avtaar " and "Amrit",Scorsese manages to stand out because of the performances by the leadpair. The novelty is also there because of the way it has been handled. No loud shrieks, no over-the-top hamming, no clich?d dialogues. I havenever been a Hollywood-fan, believe me. Especially with all thosemovies full of cobra's, killing and corrupt policemen. But today Idecided to go for a handsome face on the poster of the cinema, and satdown to watch about 3 hours of typical Hollywood fun. No regrets! Amodern story about conflicts between generations, growing up indifferent ages, with different traditions. A story that will make theaudience in many countries feel could be their own story of life. Eventhe music was not disturbing, and the humor is refreshing at times...
After movies from Indonesia have won my heart earlier in 2010, andFrance with 'Amelie', Hollywood is the next, with Bollywood loosingground.

    Excellent with a perfect cast

I have been waiting for this movie since I read the book back inSeptember 2008. I was very disappointed that it was pushed back fromOctober 2009 to February.
The movie is suspenseful, not very scary though I did jump once. It isjust creepy. It stays true to the book, which I always appreciate. Idon't want to go too much into the plot, as I'm sure it would bepointless as most have already read what can be read without it beingspoiled.
Leonardo DiCaprio gives the best performance of his career (and that issaying a lot with a resume that includes The Aviator and The Departed). He became this character and this is truly acting at its finest. Ican't imagine the difficulty of pulling off what he did. If nothingelse, see this movie for his performance. It is truly astounding. Ireally hope he is recognized next awards season.
Mark Ruffalo was great as Teddy's partner, Chuck. A perfect pick forhim.
The beautiful Michelle Williams was haunting as Teddy's wife,Dolores, and she delivered a knockout performance as well.
    Sir Ben Kingsley was wonderful.
If you have not read the book, watch throughout the movie for thingsthat will help you to better understand the ending. Otherwise it isworth a second viewing to see everything you may have missed (I readthe book, saw the clues and STILL want to watch it again!) This was aperfect thriller. Suspenseful and creepy right from the start but nevertruly horrifying. Scorsese delivers with a great cast.
    See this movie!

    Wow...Suspense at its Absolute Best

I saw this movie last night and am waiting to see it again. There istruly no other movie like this. I could come up with none.
Leo and Mark do a fantastic job in their roles of Teddy and Chuck, innocent bystanders in a less than innocent island. The two of them arelooking for a prisoner, Rachel, who has escaped. All of the staff willnot give them any answers or files that will have evidence to help thecase. The longer they search for evidence, the more suspicious everyonebecomes.
The plots constant, yet believable, twists keeps you on the edge ofyour seat the whole time. You will be thinking about it for days. Theend packs the biggest punch I have ever experienced.
I cannot give this movie enough credit. Be warned, this movie will haveyou questioning your life and the music will forever haunt you.
