Is it the Milos Forman of Amadeus directing a Pet Shop Boys video? Oris it an Adam & The Ants video sequel? It's essentially a camp popvideo with (extremely) high production values. There's a bizarre timeout about half way through, where, taking a break from Mlle Farmer'sbreathy eurovocals the music tries to work out whether to mutate intoMichael Jackson's Thriller or Vangelis.
A gore-spattered, slo-mo realist fight is well handled and Iparticularly like the conclusion to the opening duel, where the lover'scape bursts open to reveal billowing crimson. But basically it's dated;it's what Prince would have done if he'd made Dangerous Liaisonsinstead of Under the Cherry Moon.
First of all it is absolutely amazing to see a music video that isbasically shot as a film on proper film material with a huge budget.Secondly: you get to see the delightful Mylene Farmer naked. That initself is worth watching the film. The film is basically a music videoto a fairly timeless dance-floor song which has very well writtenlyrics in 18th century France. The images are fairly powerful and themessage is amoral. Visually the film is very interesting as opposed tolater videos by Mylene Farmer where she essentially uses a very Baroqueor rather Rokkoko imagery to give ordinary pop songs a depth which theyhaven't got. It's interesting, it's sexy, it's intelligent. I have tosay though that I found the sequel with its S/M images fairlydisturbing.
