this crap was terrible. it's impossible to get into the film at all.the conflict of the piece doesn't even materialize until about an hourinto it. the plot is complete nonsense, a bunch of ridiculous twistsand turns inside of this pseudo fantasy world with all these magicalrules that no one bothered to explain. needless to say when time travelbecame a big factor in the story i was beyond caring what happened atall anymore. i didn't give the least bit of a crap what happened toanyone. anvils could have fallen on everyone's heads at the 45 minutemark and i would have liked the movie considerably more for at leastentertaining me.
all i learned from this movie is that the director has some majorissues with his parents, and that the Spanish can't make movies forsh1t. they should stick to what they do best: conquering far awaylands, raping the natives and satiating their unquenchable thirst forgold by massacring entire civilizations and stealing their loot.
it gets a sympathy 2/10 for some nice photography and impressive gore.otherwise a complete waste of time.
Second time around on this one, I still think it is worth it, the filmwas scary and a movie like I haven't seen in years, mostly due to greatwriting, acting, sound, cinematography, and location. Solid movie, visually rich and a nice blend of action and horror, well-written, andgreatly interpreted. You won't find a lot of unnecessary gore or skin, what there is serves the plot instead of being the plot. One of thebest suspense films I've seen in a long time. Note: I originally gavethe film an 8 but moved it to a seven at times it did drag a little butthat didn't take away from all the positives I mentioned earlier. Thisis a date movie, definitely a must for all horror fans and should beviewed with an open mind and someone with a little more thought andsubstance.
User: jennylm83I saw this movie during Horrorfest last night, with my boyfriend. We'reboth very much into the Horror genre, and were expecting this to be ascarier movie than you'd normally see in theaters. It wasn't awful, butit wasn't great, either. To explain it clearly and rather simply... Isuppose you could call it "eerie", but that's about the extent of it.
The movie definitely gets better towards the end, and I would see itagain... but Saw 3 and Hostel were much further along the lines ofgruesome and "scary".
I was happy to see a new movie that didn't have a generic and over-usedstoryline, so I have no complaints about that. The Abandoned will keepyou on the edge of your seat, as far as suspense goes... but as far asthe gore, there isn't really enough of it until the very end. At leastnot for avid horror movie watchers like us! :)
I have read many of the comments concerning this movie and find that Itend to feel that this movie should not be judged in relation to therest of the 8 films to die for. This movie stands out on its ownbecause of the realism depicted. My son Nils and daughter Maria bothfound this too scary for them and felt it was far more scarier thansome of the rest. I saw it to be more storytelling and would judge iton that content. Yes, people are right in their comments about the goreand vileness, but it's not more than all the others. I'm going toventure to say that people are turned off by this movie simply becauseit is too confusing. This is the part where a director steps back andquits trying to leech off the success of other films of the same genre.Give him some credit about trying to diversify this movie for theaudience. Don't go in with any type of preconceived notion about thewhat you would like to see or you will be disappointed like the rest inthese comments. It is a good movie and well worth seeing.
User: sangib-utterThis movie was pretty well done, but was not nearly as scary as theothers in this film series. I did enjoy it very much and it made mejump out of my seat a couple of times. There's a lot of anticipationthroughout the film to make you jumpy, but the scariest stuff comeslate in the film (in my opinion). I'd say if you saw most of the otherfilms look forward to seeing this one, just don't expect it to top anyof the others. It's good, just not great. That being said, I will saythat this film has more symbolism than the others, which makes it moreinteresting. The use of animals in key points of the film give it arather dark and menacing tone, and keeps you on the edge of the seatthroughout a lot of the film. If you like suspense, you'll like thismovie.
User: alansmithee04 (alansmithee@gmx.com)This film (along with Rinne) are minor gems amongst the retread homagepics that have passed for horror movies so far at the 8FTDF"HorrorFest." And, yes, that's faint praise indeed. 'Cause there's notmuch worse in filmdom than would-be auteurs who think atmosphere is asubstitute for a coherent plot.
And that's all you get with The Abandoned. This is a film that was madealmost entirely in the directors head. Sure, it would have been nice ifhe'd transfered it to film, but this happened instead. It's a verypretty film with a few genuine scares, but the last reel is strictlyfor the latte slurping cineaste crowd.
This movie is a waste of time and money. Throughout the entire hour anda half, I continued to wait for it to get better and it never did. Itwas slow moving, the plot jumped around, it wasn't scary orinteresting, and really never amounted to anything. The credits duringthe introduction were long and drawn out, which was basically like therest of the movie (long and drawn out). Numerous parts of the plot madeno sense. Several times during the movie I had thought that maybe I had"zoned out" because the incongruity of the plot, however, my companionhad the same issue and assured me I did not "zone out" from boredom, but it was indeed the movie. I've actually never posted on here about amovie before and have been actively looking up movies on IMDb fornumerous years. So the fact that I'm actually taking the time to writesomething should speak volumes of how bad this movie is and that youshould not waste your time or money on it.
User: iyergayathriThis movie is simply not worth the time or money spent. Full of clich?sand a plot that makes absolutely no sense ! I cant believe that so manypeople have given this awful movie a 10. My guess is they are stoogesof the movie maker.
If I could give this movie a zero, I would. Too bad IMDb doesn't allowthat.
The only reason I watched it because I went with a friend who reallywanted to see it. Whats sad is that I never had great expectations fromthis movie to begin with and yet I felt short changed. Take my word, don't waste your $8 on this piece of trash. The only entertainment Igot out of the movie was making fun of the directors name. In all, highly NOT RECOMMENDED !
When my friends and I saw this movie in the theater, the onlycomplaints we heard afterward were spoken by people wearing clothesthat were at least three sizes too small for their bodies. Take fromthat what you will, but bear in mind that I'm not suggesting that themovie's only detractors were either pretentious horror movie nerds oruneducated yokels. That would be a sweeping generalization, and we allknow that sweeping generalizations don't have any place in moviereviews.
With that said, my aforementioned friends and myself all found themovie to be not only incredibly engrossing, but also very scary - acombination that I, personally, haven't experienced in a movie theaterin a very long time.
This movie was a jewel in the crown that was Horrorfest! First off, asa woman who's college days are behind her, it was immensely refreshingto see a heroine in her forties. Next, take her to a foreign countrywhere she doesn't speak the language and desert her in a place whereshe may not see another human being for days. Are you unnerved yet? Iwas. The next seventy-five minutes or so were some of the scariest Ihave spent watching a movie. Again, I found that one of the threadsthat I found running through this film "festival" was the grainyquality of the films. The opening credits could have been lifted off amovie from the Seventies. This movie examines, "Doppelgangers", aconcept that is more discussed in Europe than America. This left someof the people in the theater I was in, a little confused. There werethe ghosts, the Doppelgangers, the house, whatever was behind that doorand time itself. What else could you wish for? The sets, the effects, the concepts, the acting, the ghosts, the music, everything was justright to make a limp rag out of me by the end.
User: pagerwigThis film is stunning in its beauty and captivating in its acting andstory-telling. It is by far one of the best horror films of the lastdecade. I loved the way the score and setting created all of thedifferent moods. The acting and direction are unsurpassed. this film, like its siblings "Session 9" and "the Shining", will have you sittingreflectively in the theater long after the credits role in silence.Itwill have you thinking long into the night about what it all meant andwhat really happened. If you like to see a movie that makes you thinkas well as takes you on a journey you won't soon forget, then TheAbandoned is the one you have been waiting for!
User: gaus17What can i do what can i say, The abandoned is a great film and a realmeasure to Nacho Cerda's ability to direct. This film takes you to aplace you really wouldn't want to go. The fright level on this film ishigh and the suspense will have you on the edge of your seat for theduration of the movie. The main character (Marie) Anastasia Hill livingrough and raw does an excellent job and keeps you in a state ofsuspense. The movie has a wonderful story/plot and is not afraid tothrow the ball when it comes to horror movies. Cerda did not pull anypunches and hits the horror movie scene with a right cross to the jaw. This film is horror strong and a great see, you wont be playing thefool if you watch this movie. A true horror film that puts them othermovies on the backburner.
User: marth_duncan-1The Abandoned is, without doubt, one of Nacho's undisputed masterpiecesand a true flick in horror cinema. It is a film that, over the courseof the years will manage to scare the living hell out of its audiences.
Right from the beginning, as we contemplate the truck ride from thosestunning aerial shots, deeply inside us we know that something in thefilm, somehow, sometime is going to go wrong. As we obtain that severewarning, an almost inaudible voice gently whispers to us 'sit tight', asense of unexpectedness invades us all, and it is that very samefeeling that makes our hair stand on end throughout out the entiremovie.
The plot is simple: A film producer who was adopted as a baby and sentto America, returns to her native Russia and the family farm. Oncethere, strange things begin to happen including the disappearance ofher guide, the manifestation of ghosts (including her own!) and theappearance of another man who has been drawn to the farm for the samereasons.
I've been waiting for a Horror film like this ever since I heard andread about it from the 8 films to die for.
At first, I was really skeptical about Anastasia Hille casting asMarie, but in truth she manages to pull it off really well. Her ownchemistry will keep the character memorable and engaging.
Good effects, although nothing jaw-dropping, aid a lot of the action inthis film. It's a furiously quick, action-packed horror film that isdark enough to satisfy most. The plot is dark and stays fairly faithfulto the horror genre; The Abandoned may give birth to an evolution ofHorror films. However it seems as though *some* parts of the backgroundof Marie were a little thin; probably trimmed down in an attempt tokeep mainstream viewers interested, without boring them.
The final climatic fight Marie and the other characters doesn't leaveanything on the table; you'll have to see it to believe it. Well done! All in all, The Abandoned is a fun, energetic horror film that willappeal to both fans of the genre and casual moviegoers alike.
After just seeing "The Abandoned" I would have to agree with those thatfeel the movie is better than what they expected. I must say, it tooksome time to get to the goods parts, but I wasn't disappointed whenthey came into play. It was kind of freaky how there were dead doublesof the adult kids, but it's original and fits well with the flow of themovie. Nacho Cerda, the Writer/Director Nacho Cerda's "Aftermath" isanother great movie that really just blew me away. I see talent in him, that will definitely take him very far in this industry. So, if you askme if the movie was worth paying ten dollars to see and actually watchall the way thru, then YES!, it was worth it and much more.
User: victor-200This movie is an utter waste of time, the plot is awful, the dialogueis awful.
The acting is OK, but the actors have absolutely no plot or script towork with. The photography and some of the special effects are OK, too,but again there is nothing interesting in this movie to watch. There isno logical progression to the story, the story line is utter nonsense. It isn't even scary. For a movie to be scary, there has to be at leasta small element of believability. This movie has no believability atall.
There are only three characters in the movie. Each character is shallowand has no personality.
Most of the special effects and make up work are both badly done, or atmost mediocre.
I hope you read this and do not waste time on this movie unless you arecurious to see an entirely awful movie.
The film, unlike many horror-oriented films nowadays, doesn'tonly rely on stomach-churning and gory images (which it does contain, anyway) but on the excellent cinematography, giving us a sense ofever-following evil), as well. The terrifying mood and atmosphere ofthe film is carefully and masterfully woven by Nacho, who clearly knowshow to really make a horror movie. I can't praise this film longenough!

I don't get it why in all suspense movies, the word "curiosity" isinvolve in whatever part of the feature film. Of course, "it's amovie", dark paths, strange doors, the creepy house,...and, the guy hasto go through all of them. For god's sake whoever in the samesituation, at 6 a.m. next day would be on way trying get away fromthere place. Moreover, the known circle-path, you arrive where youstart, I think the entire people knew this could happen. I couldsummary the complete plot in three words: walking to hell, the couplewas condemned since they arrived, they couldn't do anything for savingthemselves. The truth for their lives, nice deal!. However I can't saythat the film was utterly disastrous, it had scary set pieces wheremade my couple hold on to my arm. Anyway, whoever says this is aastonishing movie, doesn't know what is saying.
User: SollusA different look at horror. The styling differences between Americanand Russian films is interesting. However from my American perspectivethis movie just wasn't that good. The protagonist, Marie played byAnastasia Hille wasn't a pleasant character and I had a hard timeidentifying with her. She was disagreeable most of the time andconfused for much of what little time was left. Also too much time wasspent in bringing her to the main location of the film. Then a longtime passed before any real suspense built up. Once that happened itseemed volume was used as the main effect which was more annoying thananything else. The concept was more original than most Direct-to-videomovies and they didn't use sex to make up for a thin plot. All in allI'd recommend it for renting, but not for theater goers.
User: btowns01I'm going to go on the record as the second person who has, after yearsof using the IMDb to look up movies, been motivated by Nacho's film,The Abandoned to create an account and post a comment. This was handsdown the worst movie I've ever seen in my entire life. The plot was onthe verge of non-existence, and none of the "puzzle-pieces" added up inany way whatsoever. The acting was laughable and the writing wasembarrassing. How this film got backed and came to be is completelybeyond me. The only saving grace I could find was Anastasia Hille'scunning and repetitive use of the f word. (and brilliant sound design)If I were faced with the option of seeing this film again or beingmauled by wild bores I would be up against a difficult decision. I'mdisappointed that I am unable to give it 0 stars.
