I went to a screening that they were offering for free next to my work.I am not the type of guy to see a romantic comedy, but it was free andhad my old favorite Danny Devito in it. I was pretty surprised by howmuch fun I had watching it. I walked out really happy with my choice.I'm going to bring my gal when it comes out in theaters. People werelaughing pretty hard in my theater, but some of them probably workedfor the movie theater that made it. that's what my wife said anyway.Kristin is really pretty and Dax Sheppard stole the movie in my book.Devito was funny, but he wasn't my favorite part. That was surprisingconsidering how big of a fan I am of him. Anyhoo, if you want to laughand feel better about your day I would give it a shot. Good luck!
User: John DeSando (jdesando@columbus.rr.com)Kristen Bell is cute, and so is her romantic comedy, When in Rome. Butthen so is her co-star, Josh Duhamel, and even Don Johnson in hisdotage is lookin' good. That's what romcoms do: They make us believe inthe magic of love and the durability of beauty, both of which eludemost of us eventually. This one beats bad last year's loser The UglyTruth, but it is far from the sophistication of (500) Days of Summer.
Although Bell's Beth has been hurt in love all the time, she takes achance on it at a wedding in Rome (where else?) with best man, Nick, played by Duhamel. It's all formula with a twist or two such as a magicspell cast by a fountain of love and Danny DeVito as a sausage maker inlove. In the spirit of Devil Loves Prada, she's an upcoming museumcurator with a loyal assistant Stacy (Kate Micucci), a daunting bossCeleste (Anjelica Huston), and a museum show that threatens to ruin hercareer if it fails. With the admixture of gambling for love, it's adangerous world for her.
The supporting cast of magician, narcissistic model, and faux painteramong others includes Jon Heder, Will Arnett, and Dax Shepard. They'relighthearted kooky, more amusing than most romcom casts. The slapstickof the usual romcom is more prevalent but just as enjoyable for mypreview audience as ever.
By the way, the cinematography of Rome is unusually crisp and romantic, but for me, it's the food where the true romance of Rome is found. Notin this comedy.
I thought the movie was going to be another generic chick flick.
However I was pleasantly surprised that it was more then that, it was agreat comedy. Although it did have a few gushy moments overall themovie was a blast. It was really funny, and kept me laughing allthroughout with many comic scenes.
The chemistry of the actors was wonderful too, they all worked verywell together, as if they were meant to be.
The people in theater seemed to enjoy the movie too, there were lots ofclapping and laughter.
Overall between the jokes, great actors, and a funny plot line, its agreat movie and not just for the girls.
I expected this movie to be a typical chick flick. And, honestly, itwas a chick flick. It's a movie that someone who, in my opinion, is ofthe opposite sex, wouldn't mind watching. I laughed so much throughoutthis movie. It's a fun, light-hearted movie. I wouldn't advise seeingthis movie if you don't care for chick flicks. Kristen Bell was ascomedic as ever. She and Josh Duhamel did a fantastic job complimentingeach other, chemistry wise in this movie. I can honestly say that Iwould see this movie again. It's a funny, feel-good type of movie.Definitely not a waste of time or money. If you are in the mood for agood romantic comedy, then do as the Romans do. When in Rome, watch themovie.

I loved it! It was so cute and has so many funny parts, I want to watchit again! I love Dax Shepard's character, they all were really goodcharacters though. The only reason I didn't give it a 10 is because Ifigured out the end in the very beginning, but I was still very pleasedwith it. I agree that it would have been funny if one was a girl aswell. And I disagree with the bad reviews that this movie got, but weall have our own opinions and that is why I wanted to put in mine. Iheard it had bad reviews but I still went to see it and I am glad Idid. I really think that they did a good job. and it puts a goodperspective on things.
User: cbgooseyBelieve it or not I went to see this movie not knowing who was in it ornot even seeing a trailer. I just wanted to be entertained after havinga hell of a bad year or even bad decade.
The movie delivered. Basically a madcap romantic comedy that moved fromone funny scene to the next with wonderful actors in the cast.
Sure you could say that you have seen this idea or that idea beforesomewhere else, but all together? I laughed and came home and told myhusband that I had really enjoyed the movie and it was more than achick flick. I highly recommend this movie and it does deliverwonderful well acted entertainment.
Only pay any attention to the harsh reviews if you, yourself, are acritical movie reviewer that has a jaded outlook on life.
"When In Rome" is not going to win any awards but I thought it was adecent flick. The mediocre script and predictable plot is saved by anexcellent cast.
Kristen Bell has that wholesome sexiness that has been missing sinceDoris Day stopped making films. She and Josh Duhamel have goodchemistry. Will Arnett, Jon Heder, Dax Shepard, and Danny Devito areall madly in love with Kristen Bell, which could have come across ascreepy but the actors are so good that it comes off as sweet instead.
Compared to such trash as "The Ugly Truth," and "Couples Retreat,""When in Rome" seems like a masterpiece. But it is not a masterpiece. It is as light and fluffy as cotton candy but I didn't check my watchonce during the entire movie. I wish I could say that about some of theAcademy Award nominees.
"When In Rome" is a throwback to the old style romance comedies thatare completely devoid of the vulgarity that passes for comedy thesedays. In the dog days of January, you could do much worse.
Beth (Kristen Bell) is a young curator for the Guggenheim museum. Stillsmarting from an ex-boyfriend's "adios, dear girl", she has pouredherself into her work. No time for love is her new motto. However, heryounger sister suddenly announces her engagement and very soon-to-benuptials in Rome, for the sibling has met a handsome Italian gentleman.Having no choice but to hop a plane to attend the wedding, Beth arrivesat the designated hotel, near the Trevi fountain. At the ceremony, Bethis surprised to receive some marked attention from one of thegroomsmen, Nick (Josh Duhamel) but she spies him, later, doing the sameto another lady. Thus, our little curator grabs a bottle of champagneand starts guzzling. Wading into the fountain, Beth decides to "take"five coins rather than throw any in herself. From that moment on, thelovelorn men, who deposited these coins into the flowing waters, arestuck on Beth. These include a young artist (Will Arnett), a magician(Jon Heder), a sausage maker (Danny Devito), a egocentric fashion model(Dax Shepard), and Nick himself. Following her back to New York City, they all continue to make passes at Beth, interrupting her work andsanity. How can she correct what she has done and, more importantly, how can she be certain Nick really likes her for herself? No one willever know how difficult it is for a true romcom fan to see a film onceand give it a fair-to-middlin review, when a second showing was atotally delightful experience! Therefore, if you read my review a monthago, forget what I said! The acting crew, for a start, is all quitewonderful. Bell and Duhamel are attractive, engaging performers whilethe supporting cast of Arnett, Devito, Heder, Anjelica Huston, and therest shine even brighter. Also, the costumes, sets, and overallappearance of the movie is very fine. In addition, although I found thescript and direction unimaginative on my maiden watch, I now think ithas plenty of spunk and humor. If you love romantic comedy, myrecommendation is to see it and soon. Hollywood doles out such alimited number of romcoms each year that most of us try to movemountains to view them. Ditto for this one, I'm a believer now!
User: montlawI see an awful lot of movies. Art movies - BBC productions are myfavorites, so I did not expect to enjoy this movie as much as I did. Infact, at one point I was laughing so hard my eyes were tearing and Icould not catch my breath. I will go see a Cohen brothers' movie fromtime to time and usually I am disappointed with the sophomoric humor, but this writer and director were able to bring out the humor withoutany of the usual "grossness" of a Cohen film. I was also impressed thatthe only almost nude scene was between the newlyweds! And one really"girly" note - the fashion was very appealing and realistic.
My only advice - go with someone you feel comfortable enough with tolaugh hysterically.
With its cast, I knew When In Rome was either going to have me dreadingevery minute of it or would have me laughing about 80% of the time.Luckily, it was the second one. When In Rome stars Kristen Bell asBeth, a woman who's just about given up on love. At her sister'swedding in Rome, she meets the groom's friend, Nick (Josh Duhamel, charmingly wacky in his role). Nick is an ex-college football pro whowas struck by lightning during a game. Nick is equally down on his luckwith love. Well, that's not so much to the point. Anyway, in Rome, adrunken Beth takes 5 coins from the fountains after some failed sparksfly between her and Nick. The 5 coins belong to a street magician (JonHeder), a sausage mogul (Danny Devito, glad to have you back), aself-centered model (Dax Shepard), a painter (Will Arnett), and Nick. Now, all 5 men are in love with her, but she has to figure out if Nickis for real. While all 6 people I just mentioned are very charming intheir roles, it's the brief role from SNL alum Bobby Moynihan as Nick'sfriend Puck who steals the show. He flawlessly does the JackBlack/wacky best friend thing, and he has 4 or 5 of the movies'sbiggest laugh, even though the rest of the movie is also very funny.

Here is my call to arms people
go visit the Guggenheim Museum anddonate money. After The International last year shooting up Frank LloydWright's architectural wonder, New York City decided to get some morecash influx by allowing it to be showcased in this year's rom-com crazyflick When in Rome. This film is by no means goodat all. However, thatsaid, I laughed a whole lot. Once you leave the plot behind and startto just let the absurd supporting characters wash over you with theireccentricities and obnoxious foibles, you'll find the smile you werelooking for. I did some reconnaissance before my screening and wassurprised by the multiple comments about it being one of the funniestmovies the viewer had ever seen. Now, I know hyperbole when I see it,but I had the glimmer of hope that maybe I'd at least be entertained. While the beginning twenty or so minutes went by in an excruciatinglypainful manner, once Josh Duhamel and magically entranced kooks enteredthe fray, I was able to sit back and have a good time.
Where are we, though, in terms of world creativity when this plot getsgreen-lighted? Beth has been spurned her whole life where love isconcerned, instead diving into her work as a crutch disguised as copingmechanism. Once her younger sister finds love and marriage in only twoweeks, she must journey over to Rome for the weddingwhile in the midstof a huge exhibit at the museum for which she is curatorto also bekicked by amore once again. This latest effort, at the hands ofDuhamel's Nick, or so she thinks, leads her to pick out five coins fromthe fountain of love, keeping their wishes for everlasting romance inher purse. It is at this point where hilarity begins, ushering in therogues gallery of Will Arnett, Jon Heder, Dax Shepard, and Danny DeVitoto fawn over and stalk Beth back to NYC. It is both their desperatelyinsane attempts at wooing and Nick's authentic courting hampered byclumsiness and bad luck that make this film worth watching. Admittedly,I can only watch an actor slapstick his way into light posts or downopenings in the street so many times before becoming bored, butsomething about Duhamel's affable demeanor kept it fresh despite therepetition.
The story itself really is atrocious. Just the fact that Romanmysticism and folklore is behind it all makes me roll my eyes, sofeeling any sort of connection to Beth's plight is unattainable. I did, however, really like Kristen Bell in this role, and that says somethingcoming from someone who has never been a big fan. She gives the partmuch more than it deserves and tries her best to let us care for hereven though it is her troubles that we are enjoying. Full of clich?sand gimmicks, When in Rome's setups fall flat across the board. Her jobbeing in peril and Anjelica Huston's mean boss are predictable, watching her newlywed sister in Rome cooking naked with her new husbandunoriginal, and the lame attempt at making us think that somehow thetwo romantic leads won't end up together in the end is pandering. Butall the little things in between, the tiny adventures that could havebeen skits on a comic variety show excel on their own, even if theyseem out of place in the story at hand. What can be out of place, though, when your four stalkers are a street magician, a vain modelworking on spec, a wannabe painter, and an older sausage magnate? Witha mix like that, anything goes.
Before getting into the big name bit parts, I want to mention a coupleunknowns. Why both leads needed a sidekick with insanely wide-open eyesis beyond me. Kate Micucci is cute as Stacy, but also kind of creepywith that blank stare, while Bobby Moynihan, playing Puck, (a not sosubtle nod to Shakespeare's jester), is pretty darn funny. Using"Roots" as a punchline and really just playing the goof oppositeDuhamel's star-crossed lover, I hope to see more of this guy. Butthat's enough of the newbies; let's get onto the veterans. Each ofthese four suitors is completely two-dimensional, trying their best tobring some laughs while trapped in thankless, cheesy parts. DeVito is atad overzealous going after a girl more than half his age, yet thecompletion of his arc worked for me, although he is the throwaway ofthe group. Arnett's fake Italian schtick gets old, but I can't getenough of that innocent, stupefied look whenever he does somethingwrong; Heder is annoying and strangely humorous in his costume alone, allowing a Napoleon Dynamite guest star be his role's finest hour; andDax Shepard never ceases to amaze in bringing laughs with hischaracters' gigantic egos in everything he does.
I'd like to tell director Mark Steven Johnson to stick to comic booksuperhero films, yet that didn't work out too well for him either. Theonly real thing I can fault him for here is the fact that he took onthe project to begin with. There really is nothing original in thescript besides some funny moments that hit hard due to the joke, notits relevance to the plot. Without an extended sequence of dining inthe dark that contained the always-wonderful Kristen Schaal, a clowncar gag that was much funnier than it should have been, and KeirO'Donnell's knack for playing very odd characters, I wouldn't have beenable to find anything redeeming. A few effective parts cannot make upfor the lackluster whole, no matter how hard I did laugh at times. I dothink both Bell and Duhamel have what it takes to make a good romanticcomedy together, knowing how to play the charming, romantic couple.Sadly this isn't quite it.
Since this movie was a January release, I wasn't surprised that thiswasn't a very good movie though there were some moments that I liked.Among them: Danny DeVito playing an amorous sausage maker that isn'tannoying, a car scene near the end that provided some nice funnytwists, and a cameo of a Famous Sports Star. Kristen Bell and JoshDuhamel make a good romantic team though they're not always given ampletime to make their pairing completely believable. Still, you can't goentirely wrong with the players mentioned above, not to mention WillArnett, Anjelica Huston, or, as Bell's father, Don Johnson. And theperson I just found out Kristen's engaged to, Dax Shepard, alsoprovides some charms for the obnoxious character he plays. So for allthat, When in Rome is an okay time waster.

You can do a lot of sight-seeing in Rome. There is so much history tothe place that a few days ' visit does not do the city justice. Andyet, just a few moments and you'll get to absorb the scenery already. In "When In Rome," it even just takes 48-hour stay to get to awonderful (and this case, magical) site: a fountain which grants wishesof the heart. And because of this, the lives of boy and girl just getcrazy.
Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel are not really big names when it comes toromantic comedies, but they manage to pull this one off. The two ofthem had great chemistry throughout the movie. Together with asupporting cast who are experts on being hilarious (Jon Heder, WillArnett, etc.), they made their characters entertaining and fun towatch.
Nothing is really extraordinary about the plot though. There are storyelements which we have seen before (a successful career woman who isunlucky with love, a supernatural event happens suddenly to disrupt hercurrent situation). For me, it is not that unique, but it does thetrick in keeping us interested by showing us just how far the spelledguys would go in order to grab Beth's attention.
"When In Rome" is definitely not a must-watch for everyone. Although ithas its flaws, it does what a romantic comedy is supposed to do: makepeople believe in love and laugh at the same time, a straight-arrow,feel-good movie with a fairytale ending.
Line that Stuck: "You smell like lavender... You smell like livestock."
When in Rome is the story of a young New Yorker named Beth (KristenBell) disillusioned with romance, takes a whirlwind trip to Rome whereshe defiantly plucks magic coins from fountain of love, inexplicablyigniting the passion of an odd group of suitors: a sausage magnate(DANNY DEVITO), a street magician (JON HEDER), an adoring painter (WILLARNETT) and a self-admiring model (DAX SHEPARD). But when a charmingreporter (JOSH DUHAMEL) pursues her with equal zest, how will she knowif his love is the real thing? This is the typical romantic comedychick flick. It has some funny moments but in general the situationsare kinda ridiculous and corny. The story is a little interesting butalso very predictable. The locations are good , you can see beautifullandscapes from New York and Rome. It also has some nice music thatfits good with the movie. The cast is pretty good but the performancesof some of them are lame. Kristen Bell is decent, Josh Duhamel is alsogood, Will Arnett and Dax Sheppard are hilarious and Danny DeVito andAngelica Huston are convincing enough but the one that reallydisappoints me was Jon Heder, I know he is a really good comedian buthis role as Chris Angel imitation was really disastrous. In conclusion,When in Rome can be entertaining but its not so don't waste your timewatching this and if you still wanna see it, watch it on DVD.

The first film you see in a new year is, I believe, pivotal; it setsthe mood for the rest of the year's theater-going and either buildsyour expectations...or smashes them to pieces. "When in Rome" has twohonors, both of which come with great responsibility; it is both thefirst film of 2010 and the first film of the new decade that I haveseen. Sadly, it is a romantic comedy and, therefore, is a member of agenre that is about as exhausted as horror remakes. The chances of itbeing good are immediately diminished the moment our heroine finds outthat...gasp, her ex-boyfriend is getting engaged before she can evensnag a date. Did I mention that she doesn't have a boyfriend becauseshe is obsessed with her job...and that her boss is looking for anyreason to fire her...and that her younger sister is getting marriedbefore her, in Rome no less? See what I mean? It isn't that romanticcomedies actively try to be unoriginal; it's just that there are onlyso many ways to have a boy and a girl meet, fall in love, break up, andthen reconcile, all while uttering witty remarks and usually displayingquestionable coordination capabilities. Alas, I believe any film can begood and so I settled into my theater seat to see "When in Rome" withcautious optimism...and, hey, that's better than assured pessimism.

Well here we go. Another stale Hollywood romantic comedy. I would likeat least some good characterization, no matter how clich?d the plot is.Nevertheless, the movie's abrupt short length prevents thatcharacterization.
While the scenery and production design were top-notch, one wonders whythe budget does not reflect on the mediocre script. The jokes are cornyand stale. We've seen many guys and girls fall head-over-heels in aslapstick kind for way over two decades now, Hollywood really needssome new ideas when it comes to romantic comedies. (They still need towork on their action and horror though. Science fiction, fantasy anddrama still running smoothly).
Kristen Bell is sweet. Josh Duhamel is actually quite good in hisbreakout comedic role. But the supporting actors are solid, with DaxShepard, Jon Heder, Will Arnett and Danny DeVito giving some goodchuckles (not laughs) along the ride. But I wish Hollywood would stopgiving Angelica Huston bossy/snobbish type roles. She deserves better.A surprise appearance from Don Johnson doesn't help either.
So in short, it's yet another bland romantic comedy from Tinseltown, and my neutral expectations were not met. See it for a waste of time.Didn't Hollywood learn anything from "(500) Days Of Summer"?
Overall value: 4/10
This movie kind of took me by surprise.
I knew that it was a romantic comedy, but I was surprised at how nicethe movie actually was. The story is very good and it moves forward ata good pace. You easily get caught up in the story and fall in lovewith the characters.
The ensemble of cast for this movie was really good. Lots of goodactors and actresses here, and rock solid performances. Performancesthat really make the characters come to life on the screen and makethem believable.
"When in Rome" in not the chick flick that you would assume from thecover and reading the backside of the cover. There were a lot of sceneswhere I was laughing hard. So the movie is filled with good comedy aswell as the romantic stuff as well.
This is a movie that you should watch, especially if you like lovestories. This movie is quite nice.
I just read a review, and it said they missed a great opportunity tohave a girl be one of the people in love with her. If they had put thatin there, I would have hated the movie! I'm so sick of all the gaystuff out there! And yes, woman put their coins in as well, but itwould have totally ruined the story line to put that in there! Thatthought never even crossed my mind, and I'm glad it didn't cross thescreen writes mind either! Thank you for not doing that! I have to saythat I loved this movie! It's clean, hilarious and a cute, romanticmovie! It's one of my favorites now! I thought the acting was great andthat they chose the right people to play the parts! It shows that youcan have a romantic movie without all the crud that they always try tothrow in anymore! I thought the story line was great! It's clever, andit's something that hasn't been done before! This movie is one of thebest I've seen in years, and I hope that more clean, funny movies willbe made!

Kristen Bell is Beth, young, bright, hard-working curator at theGuggenheim in NYC. With a big exhibition coming up, and a key artworkstill needing to be procured, she gets unexpected news ... her youngersister (cute Alexis Dziena as Joan) is in Rome, she has met an Italian, fell in love, and is getting married presently after a 2-weekcourtship.
So naturally she goes to Rome, and there she runs into Josh Duhamel asNick, and they seem to hit it off. But in a related scene, we find Bethsitting on the edge of the fountain, the one where people throw in acoin for good luck in love. And for some reason she decides to pick outand take several with her, including one poker chip.
When she gets back to NYC, she suddenly starts to get calls from menshe doesn't even know. And also from Nick. But over the phone hersister tells her that according to Italian legend, the men who hadthrown those particular coins in would now be unavoidably attracted toher, profess their love, want to marry her. And, since Nick is a pokerplayer, has poker chips in his apartment, she quickly figures out thatNick's apparent attraction to her is because she removed his "coin"from the fountain.
All this sets up the rom-com elements that follow. Anjelica Huston isCeleste, the hard-driving, demanding boss at the Guggenheim.
It was fun to see Peggy Lipton as Priscilla, married to Beth's dad, played by Don Johnson. I first saw Lipton when she was a member of theMod Squad in that very old TV series. She looks great for a lady almost64.
SPOILERS: We saw this with James, Emily, and Natalie, it was a Redboxrental. While Beth worked hard to divert the attention of the unwantedaffections, it turned out she had to give them their coins back. Butshe had made a mistake thinking Nick had thrown in the poker chip. Itwas actually an Italian priest who had gambled with Nick the priorevening. Nick fell in love with her for real, and when she found outthen everything was right again in the universe.
Actors seem OK. Some - even memorable. Even in this kind of flick.
Screenplay is demented. Mish-mash of other flaky movies.
Director - amateurish. Camera, though - not too bad.
Time and money - waisted.
Danny Devito and Anjelica Huston - run out of options?
IMDb seem to miss Danny Devito in the Cast list. His double ismentioned though. There are so many talented screenplays and directors, but others get the chance.
Don't go - you'll be disappointed.
Oh, well.
