    so extremely good movie

an very good storyline, good thrill to it ... but the 10 last secondsdestroyed the whole movie... what happened? extremely well made and angood story destroyed in the last seconds... sorry to say but a 1 invote... thats what it it deserve, i would think that Chris Shadleycould come up with a better end... but maybe next time : ) all thismeaningless blood gore for nothing? the end would lift the story toclose to a 10, but it didn't.... the end destroyed the whole story, ithink most people aren't lame and when they goes a movie thy want agood end, even if it is intricate ... but the only lame here is theend... sorry

    There was some effort...

Sadly it was misguided. This movie stunk from start to finish. It washard to watch because I used to watch Clarissa Explains It All everyday on Nickelodeon. I LOVED her. Then the next thing I found she did aspread in Maxim and she was gorgeous! I haven't really heard anythingabout her until I watched this movie on accident. I couldn't believeshe would even let something like this be seen with her name all overit. Everything about it was wrong but it still looked like someonesomewhere in the team was trying really really hard to save a sunkship. Too bad.. I hope she continues to act and I would love to see herwith a real cast in a real movie.

    Well worth watching

This is an interesting variation on horror films; not your typical"fright" film, it is a compelling exploration of a set of people whoare brought together under an extreme circumstance to learn about eachother. It will appeal to your brain, your heart, and your fright zone.
Noted that the film is likely to be rated "R". This may be unexpectedto some viewers who remember the TV series work of Ms. Melissa JoanHart. But the quality of the film - the acting, the writing, theproduction, etc. - are sufficient so that no one should be anything butwell pleased.
Undoubtedly, this film will soon find a distributor and be available tosee at local theaters - not to mention being soon after available onDVD.

    Modern Hitchcock

This movie has credible characters in incredible circumstances, and thedirector and writer are obviously influenced by the master, Hitchcock,so this is almost sure to have mostly upside.
No doubt many will think of SAW when this is seen. But lets face it,there are millions of films, and no matter what you make, it willoverlap other films. I didn't get the impression that this was a "copy"at any time, but merely an original script.
9 people are chained in a room by a masked man, and unless they canfigure out why, he will kill one every ten minutes.
Of course the masked man is a loony, but we at least learn later thereis a method to his madness. It doesn't even begin to justify what hedoes, but it does give us a credible belief that he is doing it. Notonce do you feel you are watching actors during this film. Thecharacters are very well drawn, and there are lots of littleintricacies that you may not notice till later.
This is very Hitchcock oriented, with lots of drama and believablecharacters. I won't spoil the film, but will say that those of us whogrew up poor and live uninsured lives will see the key to the mysterylong before the others, and it is worth noting that the Englishspeaking characters in this drama were all either in the upper crust orsuch thugs that they would not care, which was part of the point of thefilm.
There's a lot to this film. It wasn't watered down, and it has lots ofupside. It looked like it wasn't hampered at all by jealousy on thedrawing board, which means it was done by professionals from thedirector down to the assistant assistant set designer.
While SAW was original enough, this film is superior to SAW on alllevels, particularly if you want believable action, story andcharacters.

actually not that bad if a little slow

For those wondering why Melissa Joan Hart is starring in this movielook no further than the opening credits mentioning Hartbreak Films,AKA Her moms production company. Every leading role Melissa has everhad in the last 20 something years is due to Hartbreak being attachedto the production of whatever it was.
Its called Nepotism. Not what you know but who you know. Paula Hart(Melissas mom) is producer of the movie. It also explains why EmilyHart (Melissas younger sister) also gets a part in the film (although Inever saw her character at all).
Yes the movie is a lot like the idea of Saw, its also very similar tothe movie Unknown as well.
Its an extremely grown up role for Melissa, the only thing close tothis shes done is Silencing Mary. Clearly Paula Hart has gotten overher control freak stage with Melissa and her career.
The twist ending is pretty cool too.

Wanted to see the end.....wished I hadn't bothered!

I wanted to like this film, yes its a SAW, blah blah blah ripoff but Ilike those films. If done well this had all the ingredients of being agood, not brilliant, but good film....unfortunately those ingredientshad gone off! The acting was terrible, and this was first seen when thecaptives are introduced with their captor one by one (hoods taken off),the remarks and one liners are just terrible, yes I know, badwriting....but this is more than that, it was bad writing coupled withbad acting. Two of the captives had been in a relationship with eachother and did not even acknowledge this until a lot further into thefilm.....
Sorry, Im even wondering why I am bothering to review this movie atall.
I will end with PLOT HOLES, PLOT HOLES & MORE PLOT HOLES!DISAPPOINTING!

an average movie let down at the end

I watched this movie as I liked the plot, a group of strangers are heldcaptive trying to figure out how they're connected.
The setting and the premise were obviously influenced by the first (andbest) Saw movie & although there wasn't much action the story moved ata relatively good pace.
There was comedy relief ion the form of the two bickering 'Alpha males'and it was a welcome surprise (for me anyway)to see Melissa Joan Harthasn't given up on acting yet.
A few things let it down for me personally; 1. The paedophile was wayover characterised making him get turned on by everything from childrento dead bodies.
    2. MJH's line about her cop ex 'getting her into this' when in reality,he was the least deserving person to be there, he hadn't KNOWINGLYcontributed to the events leading up to their capture.
    3. The ending..... what sort of movie just ends in the middle ofsomething going on? There was no resolution, no cliff hanger, noobvious end... it just ends.
And for that alone I dropped two stars off my rating. The first 2points I would let slide but not the end!

    Why is everyone complaining

I thought this film was absolutely amazing, it was a great thriller, had an amazing story line and really kept you on the edge of your seatright to the end just to know what was going to happen. The acting wasreally good as well, its nice to see Melissa Joan Hart in such adifferent role than what we have seen her in before. The other actorson the were also really good and they played there part absolutelyperfectly. I watched this film thinking it was going to be really badbecause all the reviews said that it was, but while watching it I wastrying to discover if they were watching the same film as i thought itwas it was brilliant. Now for the reason of the 8 out of 10, the endinghas been mentioned in several reviews and they are spot on, the endingwas dreadful. Bad ending ruin films and that is what has happened withthis film as well, it was just ridiculous.

    Stuuuuuupid!!! it's craptastic!!!

My hubby and I were cruising the netflix site for something suspensefulwithout being overly gory. What we got was the cheesy-weeziest movie Ithink both of us have ever seen!! The acting was pitiful, they totallyrushed through the beginning. Because of this you don't even get half achance to develop any feelings for the characters. The dialogue wasRIDICULOUSLY bad and the longer it went on, the more and morefar-fetched it got. I was happy there wasn't much gore, but I didn'tthink it was supposed to be a comedy either!! I guess the actors didthe best they could with what they had, which wasn't much. We found itto be totally craptastic and got a few laughs out of it, but then werealized that it was 90 minutes of our lives we wouldn't ever get back. When he told me that the end was the end, I so didn't believe him untilI saw the credits!! Holy God the ending was like they just forgot thelast page of the script. I think maybe they should advise theirdirector to indeed quit his dayjob!!

My vote for worst movie of 2010

Well, I can't believe I just wasted $1.17 at a RedBox to rent thismovie. This was one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life, andI'm 49!!! I can see why it never made it to the theaters. Referenceswere made that it was similar to the Saw movies; it was not even closeto a rip off of the Saw movies. Melissa Joan Hart's acting was sohorrible, I was wishing she was shot before anyone else. It made mewish the gay pedophile and non-English speaking Chinese lady were keptaround longer. MJH was a be-otch, but not even in a good way. Thestory, plot, and acting were really bad. And I don't know if it wasjust the DVD that I rented, but there was an audio delay, so the actorslips and words were not in sync. The ending was terrible!! I totallyagree with the "WTF" comments that were made. I don't understand howanyone could have rated this movie any higher than a 1; unless younever get out to watch real/good movies. Don't waste your precious timeor money on this one!!

A great "SAW" like film, but disappointing ending =/

I thought altogether the film was very much worth watching, and I'ddefinitely watch it again! The film is much like the SAW series withoutthe disgusting gore and with more thought involved. When I say thought,I mean that it keeps you involved making you try to figure out whythey're there. The acting was average but you can't expect the best fora low budget film, and I think the acting did do justice. The only realdisappointment with this film; was the ending, it's as if they'retrying to lead you on to a sequel :/ Maybe they ran out of money forthe film and had to cut it short but there are so many better ways tofinish what would otherwise have been a blockbuster! :)

Tries to Hard To Be Deep...

I stumbled upon Nine Dead recently and read the current reviewsthinking I could deal with an average movie. This movie however wasslightly below average, yet watchable. The script was poorly writtenand the acting was at average for a B-level movie with a couplestanding out as pretty good. The plot borders on that of Saw, teachpeople what they did wrong in a situation and try to make themappreciate life more, but that is really where the comparison ends.Nine dead tries to have heart and purpose behind simple ideas that arenot new. The main fault that I found in Nine dead, was the slap in theface to the viewer of flashbacks that occurred 3 minutes before in thefilm and were completely unnecessary and a completely inadequate endingthat people won't see coming, in a bad way. Barring any spoilers I haveseen the worse of bad movies and even they didn't end this poorly.Decent flick, bad acting and ending though...

Not as smart as it looks

This was 86 minutes that seemed to drag on forever. 95 percent of themovie about these 9 not-so-random strangers bickering while incaptivity on why they are held. They all pretty much get taser-edunconscious, bagged, and dragged. They wake up in this Saw/Hostel-likecell without windows as the masked kidnapper removes their blindfoldsand gags.
First off none of the kidnapped panic and scream like a normal hostagewould do. They just stay bound dumbfounded. Then they spend the next 70something minutes bickering back and forth on the mystery of theircaptivity, while one of them gets shot every 10 minutes. Randomconfessions about their lives of scandalous affairs and murders theycommit erupt but take up screen time as they have nothing to do withthe plot. I will admit, the script on some of these characters is wellmade, and the story successfully led me on to the end as each characterunearths their own closet skeletons. The Sully Fenton and Coogancharacters had some depth along with the bewildered Chinese lady.Fenton was probably the most likable character until his lisp came outwhich got a little too overbearing in the end. Leon's character filledthe black stereotype that wasn't really necessary along with thecontroversial cop Jackson. But in the end, I found myself not caringfor any of cast in the long run.
So as soon as the remaining survivors successfully brainstormed thishair brained reason why they are in captivity, the captor comes cleanabout himself but it doesn't resolve on gigantic plot hole on why Ithink Dead Nine is an epic fail. How did he know that Christianscharacter was the one who robbed the convenient store? Which leads meto asking how did he know that Christian confessed to the fatherFrancis about his robbery? How did he know that he bought the gun fromLeon and how did he know that Christian loaned money from Sully Fenton? It just seems the captor just psychically channeled this informationprior to kidnapping them. Yes, the hostages confessed to their wrongdoings but how did the captor know any of this before hand? Maybe inthe end, he could have resolved my questions with a couple of lines.
My other complaint about Dead Nine is that it is just too systematic inits premise. Every 10 minutes, some character gets shot. Rinse andrepeat. The police are always portrayed as incompetent, even with thatbrief Baldwin cameo. It also steals the concept of Saw 6, anothernot-so-great movie with the health insurance fiasco.
I don't recommend Dead Nine even with the solid script and somecharacter development. It is a much more bloodless version of Saw andHostel in the torture department and delivers very little suspenseoverall.

    The Defense Rests

We used to have something in film: the courtroom.
This was a place where the filmmaker could toy with the narrative, howit was told, revealed, obscured. He could use words and remaincinematic. He could speak directly to us as if we were part of theon-screen audience. This has been reinforced and elaborated inthousands of ways. It is as essential to film as the family dinner andcar chase.
But it had roles that were too clear for the way those narrativeeffects are evolving. We cannot have a judge be discrete and simple. The folks making the argument; those telling the stories... It is toodiscrete. We want today to have everything start in an unresolved mode.We won't know who the judge is, who the accused, who the detective.
I think that is where this has come from. The brutality is incidentaland in fact here relatively mild. It is all about taking that trialdevice to the next level. It is, essentially all talk, all testimony. We still have vestiges of the trial: we have a judge, cops, crooks, apriest, a victim. We still need the twist on justice at the end. Boththe need and the twist are conventional. But this business of themodern trial where the jury, accused and discoverers are mixed. That isnew. It is darn exciting.
I'm not sure whether we can have this in tens of thousands of films, but there is something intelligent going on here.

Excellent movie but very poor ending!!

I have given this movie 5 stars and kept the other 5 stars hidden. Themovie was very well made and the acting was acceptable for a 2 Milliondollar budget. I found the characters to be a bit cool what with theirlives and all being on the line. The movie does remind you of Sawexcept that there are no insane torture machines. It is more sublimethan Saw, therefore safe for younger people - not kids. I wasthoroughly enjoying the movie and really liked the surprise at the end,but hated the ending. I thought that there was a mistake when it wentblack and I saw the credits. The movie just plain did not have anending. As other users have mentioned, I just froze thinking somethingwas wrong. I thought to myself this can't be the ending ... there's gotto be something else! But lo and behold the movie had indeed finished(not ended) it just stopped! You are left with nothing. It just did notend. I will give this movie the other 5 stars when they decide tofinally finish the movie. Too bad. It showed so much promise.

I've seen some bad movies in my time,

and this is now one of them.
To put it simply, the movie fails on every level. Decent concept, poorly executed in every conceivable way. The writing was terrible, theacting was worse & the ending was so abrupt it was as if the filmitself committed suicide rather than put viewers through any more pain.
As I said, the concept seemed decent, not completely original butnothing is COMPLETELY original anymore. The problem arises with thecharacter "connections". In some of the cases the connection islogical, in others it's just ridiculous. As others have pointed out inthe threads on this forum, the connections are so tenuous with some ofthe characters that hundreds of other people could have been "guilty"as well. I'm willing to suspend disbelief while watching movies, so itisn't that I'm too picky, but it's not too much to expect the writersto make things coherent & at least somewhat cohesive. Without givinganything away, there was no possible way the "bad guy" could have knownhow some of these people were connected. Just flat out impossible & thewriter(s) knew that because not even a slight explanation is given forhow the bad guy knew of those "connections".
Now to the acting, or lack thereof. The characters were less"characters" & more "caricatures", but 1 stood apart & in an extremelybad way. Melissa Joan Hart's performance was embarrassing to watch. Ihonestly felt bad for her as a person because let's face it, this isher career & she just flat out isn't good at what she's supposed to do.She plays an Assistant DA, so she's supposed to be a take charge,no-nonsense, headstrong person. Got it. Sadly MJH confused those traitswith "I'll shriek & whine & generally act like a spoiled brat, thatwill show my inner strength & intelligence!" No, just no.
So to sum up (sorry for the rambling by the way), the onlyrecommendation I can give this movie is to stay far, far away from it.There's no redeeming qualities, it's not even one of the "it's so badit's good" movies. It's just bad.

    kind of interesting

This movie is kind of OK. I think It could have been better. there aresome flaws. Communication is the key, right ? So, why didn't they tryto cooperate with each other after the kidnapper showed he meantbusiness ? What was going on with them ? Afraid to talk ? One of theguys could solve the problem and he prefers to remain silent becausehis beliefs ? Come on.... the end, well, I do not think I have to talkabout it. because it was terrible. Some of the things that happen seemto be out of context with the "situation" they were in. I would notwatch it in the theaters. It's not worth.. Besides, I think the mainstoryline has already been present in other movies ( in a much betterway ) like "saw".

Everything about Nine Dead was average

The movie I am going to discuss is Nine Dead. A film that has beencausing me a lot of interest for months because I was interested inseeing Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina, the Teenage Witch) in a differentrole. The film centres around 9 people, being held captive by a madmen, they all must discover why they are there, or every ten minutes,He will come in and shoot them one by one. Sound familiar? its verymuch like 'Saw' but its budget is far less and it shows. The film had alot of promise but I was sadly disappointed by it. The acting, sets andstory are quite average. This is a movie that will not ignite anymoreinterest in Hart's acting career or anyone else's for that matter, butit is a fun, harmless film. I was expecting a lot of gore from thisfilm, but you hardly see any blood.
I won't give anymore away but i do recommend this for any fan ofMelissa Joan Hart or the Saw movies. This is a good movie and I wouldwatch it again. Although you will be disappointed by the anticipationand the hype that was surrounding the film.
I give it 6/10 but 8/10 for trying and 8/10 for the acting.

***Spoilers*** Cheesy movie, bad all around except the acting

I'm not sure if the filmmakers were after a Saw-type movie or 12 AngryMen (people piecing together the facts to get at the truth). Whateverit was, it was poorly done and not worth watching.
I don't watch movies for blood and gore, but because this film hadlittle else going for it, it should have shown the actual killing more. Most were off-camera, minimizing the horror that we were supposed tofeel by the deaths.
It also bugged me that the cop was among the victims; he unwittinglycontributed to the innocent young man going to prison by acceptingplanted evidence (given to him by MJH) into the evidence room. (Andwouldn't MJH a the prosecuting attorney, have had access to thatevidence--taking it out and putting the wrong evidence back--anyway, soshe wouldn't have needed the cop's help?). The others, while often alsonot realizing it was this particular person they were harming, stillplayed larger roles in his ultimate demise. The gun dealer should haveknow his guns would be used for evil intent. The insurance guy rejecteda person obviously in need, etc. But the cop's crime seemed minor incomparison since he didn't know exactly what he was doing. Thefilmmakers could have taken it a step further and had him be the onethat encouraged MJH to plant the evidence, which would have made himmore culpable. And MJH's yelling that he (the cop) got her in that messdoesn't make any sense at all.
It would been more intriguing if each person died in a way that offeredthe others a clue to why he/she was there and deserved to die. Theinsurance guy, for example, could have had the applications he rejectedrammed down his throat so he choked on them; the Oriental woman couldhave had her eyes gouged out because she was a false witness, etc. Yes,more violent that the gun deaths, but more interesting.
The dialog wasn't witty, there were no twists, and the ending was oneof the worse (if not the worst) I've ever seen. The ending alongknocked three stars off my rating.
The actors did a decent job, especially given the garbage lines andmotivation they had to work with.
    Overall, a waste of time.
