    Madarasapattanam-Come,Cherish the Vintage Madras

Period films have been sporadic in Tamil cinema for the past twodecades and not many directors are daring enough to give a fling atsuch genres. But the young director Vijay breaks the mould and comes upwith an artistic portrayal of pre-independence Madras. In fact, hesucceeds in his attempt with utmost ease.
The plot of "Madarasapattanam" is quite simple. It deals with theromance between a brawny Madarasi wrestler and an aristocratic Englishbelle at a time when the Freedom Movement was at its pinnacle. Arya, asthe young wrestler (Parithi) is impeccable. His penchant for offbeatroles is evident from his choice of movies. Amy Jackson, as the royaldamsel (Amy) allures you with her innocent and snowy charm. The way shehas acclimatized to the Indian pattern of film making is quite amazing.Kochi Haneefa, who plays Amy's interpreter, manages to tickle you inhis typical style. All the actors including Nasser (Parithi's father),M.S.Bhaskar, RJ Balaji (tourist guide), Jeeva (of Lollu Sabha fame),Kumaravel (taxi-driver) and the actors who play Parithi's friends maketheir presence felt.
The narration smoothly swaps between the modern day Chennai and the1940's Madras. Thanks to some crisp editing by Antony. CinematographerNirav Shah guides us through a virtual tour through the streets ofvintage Madras. It is fascinating to see the Madras of the yore adornedby trams, bullock-carts, the crystal-clear Cooum, the dhobi ghats ofWashermanpet, and a busy Buckingham Canal! Art Director Selva has to becommended for recreating the yesteryear Spencer's and the CentralStation. But at times the back-drops seem to be like wallpapers, whichcould have been avoided. G.V.Prakash Kumar seems to have inherited alot from his uncle (A.R.Rahman) which is very much evident in his"Pookal Pookum" number. And his background score blends well with theperiod flavour of the movie. Vijay's dialogues are note-worthy.
Traces of "Lagaan" and "Titanic" can be felt here and there.Especially, the wrestling match between Parithi and the Englishman, andthe aged Amy searching her love with the necklace ('thaali') remindsyou of the yesteryear classics. Nevertheless, Vijay manages to triggerthe spirit of Madras by showcasing the rich cultural and historicalheritage of our city in this poignant love story. He leaves us yearningfor the glorious Madras of the past.
A must-watch for all Chennaiites. Come, and cherish the vintageMadras.- Deepak Kumaar Manoharan.

    Its all about Amy!!!

No big speculation,no big cast, not a great technical crew, not anintelligent director..but the product is simply superb. It was overjoyto see the movie Madharasapattinam, directed by Vijay. Its wasRomance/History genre, and for a change a story line. The highlight ofthe movie are the stars Arya and Amy...The former came up with physiqueand decent acting..and the other had a delightful smile and looks whichyou won't forget for a week.... The other important aspect of the moviewas the music by G.V.Prakash..Both the Bgm and songs wastremendous..Pookal Pookum and Kaatrile was awesome number...... Thedialogues of the movie was also quite touchy, like "400 VarusathukapramThirupi Adikirom!"-MS.Bhaskar..the comedies was also good and came withthe track of the movie... The disappointing factor is the bits andpieces of Titanic,Lagaan and Apocalypto scenes in the movie.. theQuestion is are we guys gone out to brains to have some originality inour movies!!! Otherwise its good movie to watch, and i highly recommendto watch it on screens, especially for GV and Amy!!!

Worth watching - a new genre in Tamil Cinema

The movie is all about a British Girl falling in love with a Dhobi fromMadras, who is also a brave Kusthi(wrestler) fighter, set in pre IndianIndependence era just as India is about to gain its independence.
First of all the director Vijay must be applauded for having attemptedto give a period film to the Tamil film industry that produces clich?dfilms. There were a few films like Paruthiveeran, Subramaniapuram,Aayirathil Oruvan that have attempted to break away from the clich?dmovies that are produced. There are reviews about Madrasapattinam thatVijay has been inspired from movies like Titanic and Lagaan.
This movie, though has shades from Titanic - like the 80 year old womannarrating the story, it is quite very much different in-terms ofscreenplay from that of titanic. Here the eighty year old woman comesto Chennai from Britain to find here long lost love, from whom she hadgot separated on the Day of Indian Independence. The movie shifts backand forth from past to present depicting the nostalgic feeling of theold Amy Wilkinson (Amy Jackson) as she comes across similar happeningsin the present Chennai that had also occurred in her life during herpast teenage days in Madrasapattinam.
Though the movie is good in parts, the director has divulged from themain plot in the first half, where he has tried to concentrate more onthe Indian British rivalry rather than trying to portray a subtleromance between the leads. Amy is forcefully engaged to the thenInspector Robert (Alex) who is selfish and ruthless, whom she hates tosuch an extent that she thanks the man Parithi(Arya) who accidentallyhelps her in removing the engagement ring. And from then on starts aseries of happenings involving Amy and Parithi which finally culminatesin Amy falling for Parithi. These events have been stretched too muchand the screenplay slacks deteriorating the pace of the movie.
Coming to acting part, Arya is good as a rough and tough wrestlerportraying the right facial expression, but when it comes to theromantic part, he fails to impress and Amy steals the show with herinnocent charm. For a foreigner to give the right emotions in a nativefilm is asking too much of her and she seems to have done it with easeand is a big positive in the film. Nasser and Cochin Haneefa are goodas usual in their supporting roles, though the director has overdonethe Cochin Haneefa part that leads to a diversion from the plot.
The sets of the old Madrasapattinam have been well crafted, but we getto see only Madras Central and the River in front of it that is usedfor ferrying. Sets of old Mount-road is a big letdown and fails tocreate an impact. Cinematography by Nirav Shah is good with distinctiveshades for the past and the present, but he still is yet to outperformhis previous best Billa. Back ground music by GV is the best he hasscored until date and creates a mood for the period film.
Another thing the director has failed to look into is the Tamil dialectduring the pre Independence period. The characters seem to speak thesame slang in the present and the past.
On the whole the movie is a different attempt in the Tamil filmindustry and is worth watching.

Watch the movie with least expectations.. it will exceed yours :)

Madrasapattinam is the good product of director Vijay. The directoralong with the art director & CG ppl has done a great work onrecreating old madras which does not feel odd in any scene in themovie..
period movies are very rare in Tamil movie industry. The director & theproducer has got the guts to take up a period movie genre to show thelove story. yes..though the movie is set in pre-independence era, thishas got nothing to do with the independence & freedom fights..its apure love story..
Arya is at his best..U can believe that he is a wrestler in thismovie..no six-packs syndrome.. :) he is good at delivering subtlecomedy also..Heroine Amy emotes well in the screen..she looks gorgeousand suits her role good..
the next best thing in the movie is casting..Nasser, bala singh, MSbaskar, Jeeva, Balaji and last but best haneefa..everybody done theirpart well..
This movie is more of a musical flick than love..Composer GV has done agreat job in songs and RR..One can feel that this movie lacks dialogueand RR fills it most of the time..
Its a great meal to Nirav shah, the cinematographer of this movie..hehas already proved himself with his great work in the movies likeSarvam, Oram po etc..He has done a fantastic job throughout the movie..
The art direction plays a major role in the movie..Madrasapattinam isnot a fantasy..one could not cheat the audience by showing someimaginary places...every old place in chennai has got proof..and theart dept did not cheat us.. :) This is the only movie in which theaudience were still at theater for the end credits..thanks to theold-new madras fotos..
Verdict : Good , big & rich attempt by Vijay..and a must watch movie..

    Tamil Titanic

for those fed up of watching regular Tamil movies; this movie gives abreak with some big releases following it, no better push can beexpected; the movie drags itself for 170 minutes good music by GV andsongs being the backbone holds you tight; not much of cgi but very wellmade for an Tamil movie. A TRAGIC ROMANCE. Amy Jackson has beenportrayed very beautifully, great acting in her first ever movie,aBritish beauty; a tragic ending was not that much needed, after allthose tragic things happening throughout the movie. no matter the castjust go for it; worth watching. . .

Happy Journey.. from Chennai to Madrasapattinam

If Tamil films were all about fulfilling your expectations that you hadwhile watching the trailer and with good songs and star caste providedwith a touching climax.. Well Vijay has achieved all of the above inform of his masterpiece - Madrasapattinam. There were a lot of scenesin the film that recalls itself in our mind even after coming out ofthe theatre.Especially Arya's introduction and when Amy talking inTamil for first time.
The buzz found in the first half was quiet missing after interval.Maybe it was intentional..!People were able to relate a lot of scenes withTitanic, Lagaan, Mangal Pandey, and even Apocalypto. But the way I seeit - Such an experience was never there in a Tamil movie all theseyears.Makes you proud watching it and has never left you boring at anypoint.
So now Please, stop reading this and go and see it. You won't regretit. And I recommend this movie to any Tamilian in the whole world..

    Extraordinary performed movie

Very very expectant movie. enthusiastic. marvelous love story. songsare very superb & awesome. asking to hear more and more. lyrics alsobreaking point. after a long time good love story among megasuperstars. stunning performance. i have refer nearly more than 50persons to view the movie. even me too take it 10 times. also need moreto taste.
Indian titanic especially south Indian. after "uyire" movie this filmmade sensation. don't miss .
i don't have any other words to say...
Madharasapattinam-True that the love and emotions we hold for someonewhen in the presence of him/her is an extra ordinary sense that GOD hascreated in us.But something which is more divine is the feeling whichwe have towards them in the same magnitude or even greater when ourmind and heart knows the fact that they are away or even out of ourlives.A Sweet romantic story well told and well captured in thebackdrop of Indian independence.Amy Jackson is cute lovely andbeautiful and has shown good acting talents.Einstein's theory provedyet again by by making you feel the otherwise lengthy first half not solengthy at all (Let his soul rest in peace). has done a decent job.themovie is well supported by almost all the one in the acting crew.theend was great and emotional.the movie would have been awesome ifdirector had taken bit more care on the graphical end and with thereplacement of the horrible background score...and also the theportrayal of Chennai in 1940s was a disappointment....anywaysMadharasapattinam is worth a watch

A romantic epic inspired from Titanic

Madrasapattinam is one the best love stories in Tamizh Cinema ,inspiredfrom Titanic. The movie intercuts throughout from flashback to presentevery now and then. First half goes about with humor and love betweenthem. Second half completely is about chase. After struggles finallyAmy finds Arya(Paruthi) in India after 6 decades.
In the pre-independence India , director portrays typical Madras withhelp of realistic CG and sets. Nirav Shah's cinematography hasbrilliantly added and subtracted elements in the frame to bring out alively 1940's Madras. Damn realistic sets and matte paint work of CGartists help recreate Madras.
Amy steals the show and proves to be the perfect choice for the role.Arya has done what was expected off him. Haniffa , Balaji and Jeevachip in with quality humor.
Director Vijay builds on small loops to make sure there are noloopholes in the movie. So much of detailing has gone into the movie inevery frame . For directorial touches , in present Chennai hesarcastically shows how an educated guide cheats on foreigners andilliterate taxi driver is genuine .
Feel of Love soundtrack works out magical at many scenes.
Madrasapattinam is a director's magical movie if you stop complainingabout the inspiration .

Nice movie with a mix, yet not losing its originality

I went to this movie with absolutely no expectations, Arya isn't thatbig an actor,The director hasn't made any exceptional movies, and soon.
But the movie was really good.It showed a great deal of teamwork andeffort, and more importantly it was all well used and portrayed.
Chennai portrayed to the best as in the year 1947. The heroine - AmyJackson is beautiful and has done a really wonderful job.Her eyes showlots of experience, for a girl of her age.
The story line is similar to that of Lagaan, and many scenes remind youof both lagaan and Rang de basanti, yet the movie has its ownoriginality and inspiration.
Arya isn't portrayed as a hero who fights for freedom,he is portrayedas one who fights for Love.
Editing was awesome, Direction was good. The only negative point of themovie is the songs and BGM. songs don't get in sync with the movie toowell. BGM isn't much original and doesn't give the full effect atvarious scenes.
Still overall the movie is watchable. The reason i rated it 8 wasbecause of the good acting, direction, screenplay,no unwanted comedy oraction or songs, and mainly because there was some originality/realityin showing a historic adventure.( something that Ayirathil oruvanlacked ).
The movie may seem a bit lengthy, but don't worry cause it wont boreyou out.
Overall - Good movie( don't miss it)
