Not a bad film, a little better than the 5.0 suggests. A good blend ofcharacters let down only by the fact they cover every dynamic of personpossible, amusing & easy storyline to follow & two or three hilariousmoments. Nothing overtly great about it, but so long as you put asidethe following flaws well worth a watch: 1) It's difficult to believe anentire bus full of people could all mistake Newcastle under Lyme forNewcastle, for too long we never had an understanding of where the buswas.
2) The timeline of the film & the emphasis on the opening scene (withthe West Ham fans) was a peculiar angle to take. There werehalf-a-dozen scenes of more significance than that one (even includingmoments at either end of that scene). Why it was deemed that importantto the film I don't know - even characters within it, never crop upagain, yet have the lines to open the film & are deemed the main cast.
3) For a comedy there were a few segments with little humour -deliberately so - more character driven scenes, but at odds with therest of the film.
But all in all, a good effort, you'll see a lot worse films of thistype, than this.
I just like this movie, I don't know whether because I watched itwithout any expectations. It is a very simple, but interestingly funnymovie. The actors may not be famous, but they have done reasonablywell.Normally silly comedy movies provide nothing to think about, butShouting Men has some scenes which may go through your mind after youwatched it.
Warren Llambias and Matt Daniel-Baker (writers) done really well as Rodand Terry respectively. Dudley Sutton's Charlie demonstrates apassionate football fan.
I rate this 7/10.
The Shouting Men is a comedy that tries to be a classic British workingclass slice of life comedy but is full of characters that are prettymuch caricatures. The only words we could think of to describe this isweak - it is an an uneasy mix of weak comedy and caricatures of peoplethat wouldn't possibly be real.
The plot of a bus load of supporters sharing a min-bus(Completelydemographic: Race, Age, Gender, Disability: all boxes ticked; and Istarted to feel like I was being manipulated (and doing communityservice)) is fairly tragic, and whiles there's some good thinking, thescript is way too frantic and way way too maudlin and truly lacksdefinition.
This would have worked so much better as a buddy movie - there are waytoo many characters and it just falls flat trying to juggle all thestory lines. If the two main characters has had a road trip and metthese people along the way it might just have been watchable - but thenagain...(I may be on my own here, as I write this it's got 16 votes and8.2, so what do I know?)
All in all, a crashing disappointment, very few laughs, the drama isvery heavy-handed, and worse, blatantly manipulative, and is massivelyguilty of being unable to find either its real heart or the heart ofthe beautiful game.
I feel this film has been underrated by many people, after all it ismeant to be a comedy and not a true to life story, I have read someother reviews that appear to compare the movie and characters to reallife situations but I feel the intention was not to mimic true factsand make a movie filled with amusing characters instead
I first watched this expecting it to be a lot worse than it was so waspleasantly surprised when it turned out to be a pretty funny movie;some of the characters are hilarious.
Parts of the storyline were predictable, but even so it did not takeaway from the fact it was a funny movie well worth watching.
